Leeds limited Deshler to 77 total yards Friday as the Green Wave captured the Class 4A state football championship with a 30-0 at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
    Coach Keith Etheredge’s team (14-1), which played in the 3A state finals in 2013 in the last year of the Super 6 Championships, moved up one class and never missed a beat rolling through the state playoffs with four shutouts in five games. The Green Wave outscored the five playoff opponents 208-14.
     Junior quarterback Tadarryl Marshall earned MVP honors rushing for 107 yards on 20 carries while completing 6-of-11 passes for 98 yards and a TD. None was more important than his 33-yard pass to Jermaine Johnson for the first score of the game early in the first period. Adam Brown caused a Deshler fumble that Leeds recovered, and on the next play Marshall and Johnson connected for the score.
     Leeds place-kicker Morgan Coston followed with field goals of  31 and 34 yards in the second period and a 37-yarder in the final quarter. Demontrez Clark also scored on a 65-yard interception return with 1:21 left in the first half to give the Green Wave a 20-0 lead.
     Tre’ Nation scored the final TD on a 4-yard run with 2:42 left in the game capping a 12-play, 77-yard march.
     Leeds linebacker De’Angelo Webster had seven tackles, including four that resulted in losses 26 yards in losses. Clark had five stops that included a sack resulting in an 11-yard Tigers loss.
    The Green Wave limited Deshler’s offense, which came into the contest with two 1,000-yard rushers, to just seven first downs and 77 total yards on 47 plays and forced eight punts.  Leeds had 296 total yards on 61 offensive snaps.
     Nation, a junior, gained 68 yards rushing on 17 carries and finished the season with 2,050 yards on the season with 27 TDs. Tyler Wright had 16 yards on six carries and totaled 1,415 yards and 15 touchdowns. Marshall closed out the season with 1,376 yards and 1,252 yards passing.  Jermaine Johnson had three catches for 71 yards.
    Coach Michael Statom’s Tigers (13-2) also played well defensively. J.D. Grissom had 11 tackles, LaDarrius LeShore nine and Taylor Ellison and Taj Bates eight each.   Quarterback Sam Howard had 14 carries for six net yards – suffering 53 yards in losses.  Terrance Byrd led with 18 yards on seven carries. Howard was also 4-of-22 passing for 41 yards and punted eight times for a 40.4 average.
   Leeds’ state title was the third in school history and also the third since 2008. Etheredge’s team opened the 2014 season with a non-region 27-24 win over 3A state champion Madison Academy.
