Lauderdale County Lady Tigers Capture State Record 74th Consecutive Victory

Lauderdale County High School’s Lady Tigers basketball team won their sixth straight Lauderdale County girls’ basketball tournament title Saturday night beating arch-rival Lexington  57-26.
The victory by Coach Brant Llewellyn’s three-time defending Class 3A state championship team closed the books on a record-setting week.
In the first round at Rogers High School Jan. 20, Lauderdale County beat Brooks 75-24 to tie the AHSAA state record (72) for girls’ high school basketball wins in a row. Athens set the mark in 2001-03.
On Thursday night in the semifinals, the Lady Tigers beat Central-Florence 69-48 for their 73rd win in a row to surpass the streak that tied the boys’ consecutive win record held by A.G. Parrish of Selma since 1947.
And on Saturday night in the finals, Lauderdale County downed arch-rival Lexington 57-26 to claim the county tournament title to extend the winning streak to 74 games – a new overall AHSAA state record for girls and boys.  Junior guard Emma Wallen led the Tigers with 21 points and Allie Craig Cruce had 10. Lexington (19-6) was led by Rebekah Hambright’s 10 points.
Ironically, Lexington is the last team to post a win over Llewellyn’s talented team in the last game of the 2013 regular season. Lauderdale County went on to win seven straight the rest of that season to win their second straight Class 3A state title, then followed with a state-record 38-0 season last year.
Last season’s state title was the the school’s 11th girls’ state championship – another AHSAA record.  The county title was the school’s 27th overall. Lauderdale County has won every county tournament girls’ title since 1996 but two.
Currently, the Lady Tigers improved to 29-0 after winning the county title with two regular season games remaining. Lauderdale County is at home Tuesday versus Madison Academy and on the road Thursday at Lexington.
Llewellyn’s team will host the girls’ Class 3A, Area 15 tournament next week.
