20 Points Separate Pair after First Day St. Paul’s Krause, Pelham’s Hines In Tight Race at Top of Heptathlon

   HOOVER – Seniors Charlotte Krause of St. Paul’s Episcopal and Erin Hines of Pelham closed out day one of the 25th AHSAA State Heptathlon competition being held at Hoover High School just 20 points apart and appear heading for a showdown Tuesday as the competition concludes.
    In the AHSAA 63rd Decathlon Championships, Northside’s Andrew Robertson amassed 3,305 points Monday to build a 70-point lead over Nick South of Muscle Shoals (3,235) with five events left for Tuesday’s final round of events.
    Krause tied for the best high jump (5-05.75) and was second to Hines (15.46) with a 15.64 time in the 100-meter hurdles and compile 2,729 points after four events in the seven-event competition.  Hines, who had the second-fastest 200-meter time (25.46 seconds) Monday behind event winner Elysa Griffin of Homewood (25.25), was second after the first day with 2,709 points. Hines finished third in the 2015 competition.
    Callie Jones of Cottage Hill was third in the field of 37 with 2,570 points, followed by Homewood’s Caroline Lawrence (2,338), Michelle Roca of McGill-Toolen (2,289), Kennedy Brown of Smiths Station (2,275), Jazymon Balous of Northridge (2,255), Jade Johnson of Northridge (2,239), Darria Judge of St. Paul’s (2,214) and Audriana Blakely of James Clemens (2,199) to round out the top 10.
    Competition gets underway Tuesday at Hoover High School Stadium at 9 a.m. with the girls competing in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters to close out the 2016 competition.
    Lawrence tied  Krause with the best high jump (5-05.75) and Ohatchee’s Victoria McRaney had the best shot put throw (33-09), just edging Foley’s Trinity Morgan’s 33-03 throw.

Robertson Leads Decathlon Standings
    Northside senior Andrew Robertson had a solid performance Monday with a 21-foot, 8 3/4 –inch leap in the long jump to finish first in that event and was second with a shot put throw of 41-01 to total 3,305 points. Muscle Shoals senior Nick South compiled 3,235 points, 70 off the pace set by Robertson, with the best time in the 100-meter dash (11:51) and a second in the 400-meter dash (52.45).
     Senior Payton Youngblood of Oak Mountain was third with 3,155 points, followed by Hewitt-Trussville’s Jonathan Mann (3,146), Foley’s Keldrick Edwards (3,069), Jamichael Manley of B.T. Washington (3,055), Noah Williams of Hoover (2,972), Christian Brandt of Auburn (2,940), Ryan Sullivan of Falkville (2,934) and Eric Bradshaw of James Clemens (2,848) rounding out the top 10 leaderboard.
    Manley had the top shot put with a 44-03.5 toss. Cullman’s Walker Caretti sped 50.48 to win the 400-meter dash competition, and Mann tied Fairview’s Antonio Taylor in the high jump competition clearing 6-01.75.
     The 63rd AHSAA State Decathlon competition will conclude Tuesday with competition in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
