Senior Scores 6,501 Points Muscle Shoals’ Nick South Wins 2016 Decathlon

   HOOVER –    Muscle Shoals senior Nick South won the pole vault event and 110-meter high hurdles Tuesday compiling 6,501 points over the two-day competition to win the AHSAA’s 63rd Decathlon Championships held at Hoover High School.
    South, who was second to Northside’s Andrew Robertson after the first day, leaped 15 feet, 5 inches to earn 819 points in the pole vault and picked up 865 points with a 14.87 time in the 110-meter high hurdles to finish tops in that event Tuesday. He won the title that totaled a field of 40 competitors.
     Oak Mountain senior Payton Youngblood finished second with 5,808 points, and Robertson was third overall with 5,776 points.
     Youngblood won the javelin with a toss of 164-06, Valley’s Mac Jackson won the discus with a throw of 117-10, and Micah Sollie of Beauregard edged John Paul Williams of McGill-Toolen for the top 1,500-meter time clocking 4:25.10 to win. Williams ran the distance in 4:27.54.
     Finishing fourth overall was Ryan Sullivan of Falkville (5,663). Also finishing in the top 10, in order, were Connor Allred of Cottage Hill Christian (5,393), Jonathan Mann of Hewitt-Trussville (5,304), Eric Bradshaw of James Clemens (5,265), Jake Spotswood of McGill-Toolen (5,234),  Christian Brandt of Auburn (5,221) and Andy Chappell of Hewitt-Trussville (5,184).
