Class 3A State Volleyball Championship

Bayside Academy 3, Madison  Academy 2

Bayside Academy captured its 13th straight AHSAA state volleyball championship Thursday night, but not without plenty of drama.
Madison Academy battled the Lady Admirals point-for-point all match and was serving in the fifth set for the winning point at 15-14. Bayside survived that challenge, then settled the marathon Class 3A championship by winning the final two points to take a 15-25, 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 17-15 victory to keep the state championship streak alive for yet another year.
Bayside (44-9) has now won a state-record 23 state titles. Coach Ann Schilling’s team needed their full arsenal to nip Coach Wendy Tucker’s Mustangs (50-12).  Lauren Chastang, the tourney MVP, had 22 kills and 13 digs on the night for the Admirals. Ariel Dulaney added 19 kills and 13 digs and Brantley Rogers had 13 kills.  Setter Ansleigh Dailey dished out 52 assists.
Taylor Gill had a phenomenal performance for the Mustangs with a 2014 state-tournament high 34 kills. Addison Rucker, daughter of the head coach, had 20 assists and Lauren Milar had 18. Gill also had 14 digs, Rucker had 13 and Haley Palmer, 23.
