CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Saint James 3, Deshler 1

    BIRMINGHAM – Saint James beat Deshler 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 Thursday afternoon at Bill Harris Arena to claim the 2017 AHSAA Class 4A state volleyball championship. The state title was the third in school history and the first for Coach Karen Lee.
    Junior outside hitter Carson Ann Crow recorded 21 kills and 16 digs to the Class 4A state tourney’s MVP honor. Her play up front helped the Trojans (37-9) from Montgomery roar back after dropping the first set 25-21 to Coach Jana Killen’s Tigers (43-15). LizAnne Livings added 16 kills and Bailey Williams had eight. Setter Emily Olsey had 29 assists and 12 digs and Emily Poundstone had 21 assists and 11 digs.
    Leading Deshler was 6-foot senior middle hitter Karleigh Sledge, who had 21 kills and two blocks. Madison Jackson had 10 kills and Ashley Wellington added 24 digs. Setter Kandice Ricks had 37 assists and 15 digs.
    The two remaining state finals are remain to be played today. Both are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.

CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Alexandria 3, Lawrence County 0

    BIRMINGHAM – Alexandria High School volleyball coach Whitney Welch had the opportunity to play on a state championship volleyball team for the Valley Cubs while a student at the Calhoun County school. After Thursday’s 25-23, 25-16, 25-13 win over Lawrence County in the Class 5A finals of the  46th annual AHSAA State Volleyball Championships at Bill Harris Arena, she has now been able to share that experience with her team as the coach.
     The Valley Cubs (44-9), who lost in the5A finals in 2016 to St. Paul’s Episcopal, rolled through the Class 5A state tournament winning three matches without losing a single set. They clicked on all cylinders in the finals with senior outside hitter Taylor Spradley recording 20 kills to earn MVP honors. Fellow senior Aubrey Pope added 14 kills and senior setter Gracie Muncher dished out 40 assists. Junior Mattie Wade had 18 digs.
     Coach Robyn Hutto’s Lady Red Devils (59-5) were led by juniors Lauren Mayes and Savannah Graham, who collected 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Setter Laekyn Bennett had 23 assists and Sami Parker had a team-high 13 digs.
   The championship was Alexandria’s fourth state volleyball title overall, but the first in Class 5A. The first three (1993, 1994 and 1995) were in Class 4A.
    The three remaining state finals will be played today with all being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.

CLASS 7A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP McGill-Toolen Catholic 3, Bob Jones 0

BIRMINGHAM – McGill-Toolen Catholic High School junior outside hitter Kenya McQuirter  accumulated 23 kills to lead the Dirty Dozen (46-8) to 25-16, 25-23, 267-25 win over Bob Jones to claim the Class 7A state volleyball championship Thursday at Bill Harris Arena.
    McQuirter also had 12 digs and five service aces to earn MVP honors as McGill-Toolen won its first state championship since 2005. It was state crown number 20 for the Mobile school in the 46-year history of the tournament and the first for head coach Kate Wood.
     The Dirty Dozen, which knocked off three-time defending champion Mountain Brook in the semifinals Wednesday night at the CrossPlex, had to claw from behind in game three to keep from forcing as fourth set. McQuirter’s presence at the net was just too much for the Patriots (41-11) to overcome. Alex Pierre also had 11 kills, Erica Schilling had 15 digs, Lillie Fromdahl and Millie Andrews had 25 and 20 assists, respectively.
    Emma Jarrett’s 10 kills led Coach April Marsh’s team. Alana Cox also had nine kills, Aija Abele had 25 assists and Karmahn Hall had 17 digs. Abele also had three service aces.
   The four remaining state finals will be played today with all being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.

CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Pelham 3, Jasper 2

    BIRMINGHAM – Pelham captured the school’s third state volleyball championship and the first since 1997 winning an incredible 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 17-15 victory over Jasper in the Class 6A finals of the 2017 AHSAA State Volleyball Championships at Bill Harris Arena Thursday.
    Both teams clawed back time and time again with Coach Perry Robinson’s Panthers (41-9) rallying from a 24-19 deficit in game two 26-24.  The Vikings (57-5) of Coach Bobby Daniel rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win games 3 and 4 and force the fifth game.
     Emorie Long had 17 kills to lead Pelham and earn MVP honors.  Four teammates also had 10 or more kills in a contest that had 63 for the Panthers and 62 for Jasper. Sarah Guthrie also had 13 kills and 16 digs, Kaytlyn Maddox and Jamila Wilson had 11 kills each and Erin Long had 10 for Pelham. Setter Georgia Stonicher also had 56 assists and Grace Nolen, 19 digs. Guthrie also had three service aces.
    Walker had four girls with 12 or more kills with McKinley Fergerson totaling 18, Tameyah Griffin and Morgan McClendon, 13 each, and Alex Oliver 12. Ferguson and Khloe Kimbrell had 29 and 25 assists, respectively. Temperance Chatman also had a match-high 30 digs and four ace serves.
    The five remaining state finals will be played today with all being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.

CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Addison 3, Meek 1

    BIRMINGHAM – Addison High School rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat arch-rival Meek 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 Thursday Morning at Bill Harris Arena to capture the 2017 AHSAA Class 1A state volleyball championship.
   The finals pitted two schools from Winston County in the championship match for the first time in AHSAA history – a proud moment for both schools.  For Coach Kayla Woodard’s Bulldogs (51-8), the championship was fifth in a row dating back to 2013. Meek won the 1A state title in 2015 – the same year their county rivals won the 2A state crown.
   Senior Abbie Chambless led the Bulldogs with 20 kills and 12 digs to earn MVP honors for the second straight year. Savannah Manley added nine kills and two blocks, Kendra Tyree had 21 digs and setter Cecilee Gaither had 21 assists.
   Pacing Coach Dana Waldrep’s Tigers (46-18) was Savanna Banks with 22 kills and 24 digs. Amanda Cunningham also had 15 kills and setter Jayden Waldrep had 34 assists.
   The two teams met seven times this season including playing in the Winston County tournament finals. Addison won all seven, but all were very competitive, said both coaches.

3 Defending Champions in Finals Championship Matches Set for 46th AHSAA State Volleyball Championships Thursday

    BIRMINGHAM – Fourteen outstanding volleyball teams advanced through quarterfinal and semifinal play Wednesday to advance to the 2017 AHSAA State Volleyball Championships Thursday.
       Defending champions Addison (1A), St. Luke’s Episcopal (2A) and Bayside Academy (3A) each claimed semifinal victories at Birmingham’s CrossPlex Wednesday. The 46th annual championships move to the Bill Harris Arena next door beginning at 8 a.m., with 1A finals at the 5,500-seat arena. The remaining schedule features the Class 6A finals at 9:45 a.m.; Class 7A at 11 a.m.; Class 5A at 1:15 p.m.; Class 4A at 3 p.m.; Class 2A at 4:45 p.m.; and Class 3A closing out the seven championship matches at 6:30 p.m.
    Each championship will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network with veteran announcer Jerry Young handling the play-by-play.
      Bayside Academy (41-10) nipped Carbon Hill (69-10) in the Class 3A semifinals Wednesday 3-1 to move into the 3A finals Thursday. The Lady Admirals of Coach Ann Schilling will striving to claim their 16th consecutive state crown facing Montgomery Academy (44-12) in the championship at 6:30 p.m. That match will close out the 46th annual state tournament.
    Senior setter Ansleigh Daily had 39 assists and senior outside hitter Brantley Rhodes had 18 kills in the tough semifinal win over Carbon Hill. The Bulldogs were led by junior Alyssa Dutton’s 14 kills. Bayside owns 25 state championships dating back to 1981. Schilling’s team won three in a row from 1998-2000, failed to win in 2001 and has won ever since. The 2002-2007 championships came in Class 2A and the rest since then have come in Class 3A.
    Montgomery Academy beat Providence Christian 3-2 in the other semifinal battle. Coach Julie Gordon’s Eagles won the 2A state crown in 2013.
    Addison (50-8) is going for its fourth championship in a row – winning in Class 2A in 2014 and 2015 and last year in Class 6A. Coach Kayla Woodard’s Bulldogs will face arch-rival Meek (46-17), insuring that Winston County schools will own the crown for one more year.
    St. Luke’s (33-15) will meet Goshen (28-13) in the 2A finals. The Wildcats won their first state championship last season and the Eagles are playing in the finals for the first time in school history.
    Deshler and Saint James will meet in the 4A finals. The Tigers of Coach Jana Killen will be vying for the school’s first volleyball state title. Killen has coached the Lady Tigers (43-14) to five state basketball championships, however, winning the 4A titles in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2015 and 2016. Saint James (36-9) captured volleyball titles in 2001 and 2003. Lawrence County (59-4) and Alexandria (43-9) square off in the 5A championship match. The Red Devils have five state championships with the last one coming in 1999. Alexandria won back-to-back titles in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
     In Class 6A, Pelham (40-9) is taking on Jasper (59-4). The Panthers won state titles 1993 and 1997 and the Vikings will be playing for their first state crown. McGill-Toolen Catholic insured a new 7A champion will be crowned by knocking off Mountain Brook in the semifinals. The Spartans won the first three 7A titles since the new class was added (2014, 2015 and 2016). McGill (45-7) has 19 state titles to its credit with the last one coming in 2005. The Dirty Dozen will be facing Bob Jones, which knocked off Oak Mountain in the other 7A semifinal. The Patriots (41-10) have two state titles with the most recent coming in 2013.
