MONTGOMERY – McGill-Toolen Catholic High School overcame a loss in pool play to claim the championship of the Margaret Blalock Invitational volleyball tournament last weekend. The Blalock tourney, traditionally one of the most competitive in the state that serves as a good measuring stick for teams as them move into the post season, grabbed the AHSAA Volleyball Spotlight for Week 7 of the 2017 season.
The Dirty Dozen (36-7), coached by Kate Wood, lost to Hoover in pool play but rebounded to beat the Lady Bucs in the finals 2-1. McGill also beat Niceville (FL), Oak Mountain, Alexandria, Hazel Green and Bob Jones en route to the title. Kenya McQuirter had 78 kills, 14 blocks, 49 digs and five service aces to pace McGill-Toolen. Erica Schilling also had 78 kills and 15 aces, and Alex Pierre registered 44 kills and 22 blocks in the tourney.
Other volleyball superlatives from Week 7:
BRITTAN DAVIS, JAMES CLEMENS: Had 12 kills versus Grissom to go over 1,000 kills for her career.
CARSON ANN CROW, SAINT JAMES: Had 29 kills in two matches to go over 1,000 kills for her career.
LINDSEY WALKER, MUSCLE SHOALS: Led the Trojans to the Colbert County tournament championship with 68 kills and eight aces.
ALYSSA DUTTON, CARBON HILL: Registered 131 kills and 22 blocks to lead Carbon Hill to an 11-1 record and won the Shrimp Fest Tourney at Gulf Shores.
PAIGE SHAW, HOOVER: Helped Hoover (26-7) go 7-1 for the week and reach the Margaret Blalock finals with 110 kills, 10 blocks and ???? aces.
TORI WALKER, WILSON: Helped her team finish 7-1 for the week and finish second in the Lauderdale County tourney with 65 kills and 39 blocks.
KINSLEY HANBACK, LEXINGTON: Recorded 66 kills and 18 blocks as Lexington extended its current streak to 38 match wins in a row with a victory in the finals of the Lauderdale County tournament.
EMMA JARRETT, BOB JONES: Had 50 kills in six matches for the Patriots (32-10) at the Margaret Blalock tournament.
MALLORY ODOM, BAKER: The versatile Hornets player had 51 kills and 98 assists in nine matches to lead Baker to the championship of the Silver Bracket at the Gulf Shores Shrimp Fest tournament.
ABBIE CHAMBLESS, ADDISON: Had 64 kills, 33 digs and 15 blocks in five matches to lead Addison to the Winston County tournament championship.
EMORIE LONG, PELHAM: Had 44 kills and nine blocks in three matches for the Panthers.
JAMIE GREGG, HOOVER: Dished out 195 assists for the Bucs in eight matches.
EMMA NESTER, WILSON: Had 173 digs in eight matches as Wilson went 7-1.
LIBBY GRACE GANN, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Registered 159 assists and 10 service aces in a very productive week for the Lady Spartans.
KALEY BRUCE, BRIARWOOD CHRISTIAN: Had 126 assists, 53 digs and 13 aces as the Lions reached the finals of the Barry Walker Invitational tournament at Briarwood.
AIJA ABELE, BOB JONES: Had 109 assists in seven matches for the Patriots.
KELLAN HENSLEY, ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL: Had 155 digs in seven matches for the Wildcats.
TAYLOR FONTENELLE, SPANISH FORT: Had 127 digs and 11 aces in eight matches for the week.
TAYLOR BROWN, WILSON: Had 118 digs in eight matches as Wilson went 7-1 for the week.
HANNA RIGSBY, GULF SHORES: Totaled 105 digs in seven matches for Gulf Shores.
