MONTGOMERY – The North girls and North Boys swept the South Wednesday morning in the first-ever North-South All-Star cross country competition held on the campus of Auburn University-Montgomery.
The North girls won 20-35. The North boys won 16-47.
Cross Country was added to the North-South all-star competition this year. The All-Star contests are part of the AHSAA’s annual Summer Conference, now in its 21st year. The week-long convention is managed by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The North swept the baseball and boys’ & girls’ soccer competition Tuesday night, and the South earned a split in the softball competition.
The girls’ and boys’ North-South basketball all-star games will be held tonight at 6 and 8 p.m., at the AUM Basketball Complex. The North-South volleyball match will be played at AUM at 4 p.m., Thursday, and the 58th AHSAA North-South Football All-Star Game will close out the competition Thursday night at Cramton Bowl at 7 p.m.
Grace Jensen of McGill-Toolen Catholic clocked the fastest time in the girls’ 3.1-mile cross country race Wednesday with a time of 20:02.89. She finished almost 38 seconds ahead of Hoover’s Sydney Steely, who ran the distance in 20:40.82. American Christian’s Rebecca Billman, Huntsville’s Rachel Jones and John Carroll Catholic’s Lindsey Granier, all runners for the North, rounded out the top-five finishers. Jensen and Steely earned MVP honors for their respective all-star teams.
Hoover’s John McCrackin finished first in the boys’ race clocking 17:27.81 – an average of 5:37.3 per mile. The South’s top finisher was Dawson Oliver of Trinity Presbyterian, who ran 17:50.36 to cross the finish line fifth. Both earned MVP honor for their respective teams.
The North trio of Randolph’s Matthew Estopinal, Briarwood Christian’s Zach Howard and St. Bernard’s Andrew Sweeney finished 2-3-4 to seal the North’s team victory.
Coaching the North girls Was Les Bryant of Huntsville and Charles Tiller of American Christian coached the boys. Michael McGovern of Mountain Brook served as administrative coach. South girls’ coach was Joe Swagart of Bayside Academy and the boys’ coach was Dan Norton of Auburn. Smiths Station’s Ron Peters served as administrative coach.
