Randolph 3, Briarwood Christian 2

HUNTSVILLE –MVP Sam Hartley’s two second half goals propelled Randolph over Briarwood Christian in the Class 4A-5A Boys’ State Soccer Championship match Friday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.
Randolph (24-2-3), coached by Alex Tomlinson, scored first on senior Barrett Butler’s goal at the 22:10 mark. Ian Krajna had the assist. Briarwood (16-6-3), coached by Shawn Brower, came right back to tie the match 1-1 on sophomore Logan Frost’s goal at 29:59.
After both teams missed opportunities to take the lead, Briarwood’s Hamilton Bowen’s goal  gave the Lions the lead at 45:09. The Raiders clawed back and knotted the contest at 2-2 when Hartley scored on a penalty kick just 91 seconds later. The defensive battled continued until  Hartley got loose inside and scored on a pass from Sridhar Karne to take the lead for good with 12:37 left in the match. Briarwood had two prime opportunities to score in the final minutes. The last one came on a corner kick with 15 seconds left, but Randolph goalkeeper Max Shaw was able to deflect the ball over the crossbar and time ran out.
Randolph has now won seven state titles, which ranks third all-time behind John Carroll Catholic (10) and Grissom (8). The Raiders' state titles include 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2015 and 2017.
