HUNTSVILLE – Class 4A/5A State Soccer Championships MVP Sarah Adcock scored all six goals Friday night to lead Briarwood Christian to a 6-0 victory over Saint John Paul II Catholic in state finals played Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.
The 27th annual AHSAA State Soccer Championships will conclude Saturday with boys’ and girls’ state finals in Classes 6A and 7A beginning at 10 a.m. All finals are being live-streamed over the NFHS Network.
Adcock, a senior forward, scored 10 goals in the semi-final and championship matches at John Hunt Park. Adcock put Coach Ryan Lieb’s Lady Lions (15-5-3) ahead for good 21 minutes into the match with the first of her six goals. Her last score came with just over five minutes remaining.
Briarwood had 16 shots to just two by Saint John Paul II (14-7-2), coached by Sam Bennett. Falcons goalkeeper Alex Pressnell, facing intense pressure from the Briarwood offensive attack, had five saves on the night. Lions keeper Caroline Duffee had two saves.
The win was the Lions’ first state title since 2010 and ninth overall, a new AHSA state girls’ soccer record. Briarwood and Fort Payne came into the 2017 season with eight state titles each. The Lions won four state crowns in a row from 1997-2000 and also captured titles in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
