HUNTSVILLE –Indian Springs High School won its third state championship Friday night beating Susan Moore 2-1 in the AHSAA Class 1A-3A boys’ state soccer finals at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.
Senior forward Sam Simpson was named 1A/3A state championship MVP for his solid play on the front line scoring one goal in a semifinal win over Bayside Academy and providing strong leadership and solid play to lead Indian Springs bring to the title.
Susan Moore (20-4-1), in its first season of championship play, took an early 1-0 lead on senior Edwyn Cervantes’ goal at the 37:51 mark. The Bulldogs of Coach Bob Austin still led 1-0 at intermission.
Junior midfielder Justin Chapman’s goal at the 49:02 mark tied the match at 1-1 for Coach Rik Tozzi’s squad. Indian Springs (22-2-3) took the lead for good 17 minutes later when sophomore Donald Wilson scored at the 66:48 mark. Susan Moore staged a valiant last-ditch effort in the final minutes, but the Bulldogs were unable to penetrate the tough Indian Spring defense down the stretch.
Indian Springs outshot Susan Moore 12-7. Goalkeeper Zak Heino saved 2 shots on goal while Susan Moore keeper Brandon Martinez stopped 3 shots on goal.
Indian Springs’ previous state titles came in 2014 and 2008.
