Class 6A Girls’ Championship Homewood 52, Hazel Green 49

BIRMINGHAM – Homewood High School juniors Kalia Cunningham and Ajah Wayne each sank two free throws in the final 22 seconds to lift Homewood over Hazel Green, 52-49, in the AHSAA Class 6A girls’ basketball tournament finals at the BJCC Legacy Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Patriots (34-2), coached by Kevin Tubbs, never trailed in the 95th AHSAA State Basketball Tournament finals, but 3-point goals by Imari Martin and Claire Walker in the final minute of play put Coach Tim Miller’s Trojans (37-2) into position to have the chance to win.
The championship game appearance was the third in a row for Homewood. The Patriots won the school’s first girls’ state title in 2015 and lost in the 2016 finals to LeFlore.
Wayne, named the MVP of the 2017 Class 6A Tourney, had 19 points, 12 rebounds and three steals to lead the Patriots. She finished 5-of-6 at the foul line. This year’s title was very special to her. She injured her knee in last year’s semifinals and did not get to play in the championship game as Homewood fell to LeFlore.
Tori Webb also had 16 points and seven rebounds and Hannah Barber had eight points.
Leading Hazel Green, which set a school record for wins in a season, was Martin with 15 points and eight rebounds. She also had four steals.  Caitlin Hose added 14 points.  Each had two 3-pointers and Marisa Snodgrass also had two.
Girls’ and boys’ championship games for Class 7A are set for this afternoon at Legacy Arena.  All finals are being televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
