BIRMINGHAM – Wenonah (30-3) scored the last eight points of the game Saturday morning to post a 55-52 come-from-behind victory over Charles Henderson and claimed the Lady Dragons’ fourth straight AHSAA Class 5A girls’ state basketball title.
The Lady Trojans (30-6), coached by Dyneshia Jones, trailed by five heading into the fourt h quarter but took the lead with 5:57 remaining when 6-foot-4 sophomore Maori Davenport scored inside to put her team ahead 40-39. The lead stretched five with 1:10 to play, but the momentum changed 13 seconds later when Davenport picked up her fifth foul. She exited the game with 20 points, 25 rebounds and 19 blocked shots.
That was the break Bell’s Dragons needed. Down 52-47, Faith Reynolds cashed in a lay-up, Dastani Davidson nailed a 3-poiont goal to tie the game and Alexus Dye put Wenonah ahead for good, 54-52, with a lay-up with 16 seconds left.
Wenonah’s defense caused two straight turnovers to seal the win.
Dye finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and four steals to earn Class 5A state tourney MVP honors. Davidson added 15 points and Kourtnie Smith had 10 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots for the Dragons.
Davenport’s 20 points led the Trojans. Tatyana Siler added 12 points and eight rebounds, Niaira Jones had nine points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
Wenonah’s state title was the school’s eighth overall -- winning in 1986, 1990, 1993, 2004, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The victory was especially emotional for Bell, who has been undergoing cancer treatment all season.
Girls’ and boys’ championship games for Classes 6A and 7A are set for today at Legacy Arena. All finals are being televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
