Class 4A Girls’ Championship Madison Academy 50, Deshler 47

    BIRMINGHAM – Madison Academy snapped the third longest winning streak in AHSAA girls’ basketball history Friday afternoon and captured the school’s second state title in the process with a 50-47 victory over two-time defending Class 4A state champion Deshler at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
     The Mustangs (35-1), coached by Brian Privett, outscored Coach Jana Killen’s Lady Tigers 23-12 in the fourth quarter to overcome an eight-point deficit heading into the final frame.
     Deshler (34-1) came into the Class 4A championship game of the 95th AHSAA State Basketball tournament riding a 68-game winning streak. Center Destinee McGhee scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Madison Academy’s effort. She also blocked three shots to earn 4A state tourney MVP honors.
     Guard Jaden Langford added 14 points, three assists and two steals and Jasmine Gracie had seven rebounds.
     Deshler, which has won seven state championships in its storied school history,  was paced by Karleigh Sledge’s 20 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Shirley added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. The 68-game winning streak started early in the 2015-16 season. Lauderdale County holds the state record with 86 wins in a row from 2013-15. Athens won 72 straight from 2001-03.
    Madison Academy won its first championship with the 2011 Class 3A state title 2011.
    Girls’ and boys’ championship games for Classes 5A, 6A and 7A are set for Saturday at Legacy Arena.  All finals are being televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
