Class 3A Boys’ Championship Midfield 60, Plainview 46

    BIRMINGHAM – Midfield freshman guard Kam Woods scored 29 points to spark the Patriots to a 60-46 victory over Plainview Friday in the Class 3A boys’ championship game of the 95th AHSAA State Basketball tournament at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena.
     The state title was the third in the last six years for Midfield and the fourth overall. Other state crowns were won in 2014, 2012 and 1984.
      Coach Darrell Barber’s Patriots (28-6) struggled against a hustling Plainview squad that set a school record for wins this season finishing 31-5. Coach Robi Coker’s Bears led 15-11 after the first quarter, 27-26 at the half and 36-35 after three quarters.  Midfield took the lead on Woods’ lay-up just seven seconds into  the fourth period, followed 35 seconds later with  3-pointer and then hit a jumper to put the Pats up six at 42-36. Plainview pulled to within one at 42-41 with 4:48 to go but was out-scored 16-5 the rest of the way.
    Woods finished with four assists and three steals to go with his 29 points and was selected the 3A State Tourney MVP. Shy Cunningham added 11 points and seven rebounds and Kalon Williams had 10 points. Anthony Brown cleared eight offensive rebounds and finished with a game-high 19 total. He scored six points.
     Caden Millican had 15 points for Plainview – all coming on five 3-point goals.  Luke Graham added 11 points and 16 rebounds. Jeffery Armstrong also had eight rebounds.
    Girls’ and boys’ championship games for Class 4A are also scheduled for today with Classes 5A, 6A and 7A playing championship games at Legacy Arena Saturday.  All finals are being televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
