Class 2A Girls’ Championship Geneva County 44, Tanner 42

    BIRMINGHAM – Geneva County eighth grader Karoline Sriplin had 11 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots in the 2017 AHSAA Class 2A girls’ state championship game Friday morning at the BJCC Legacy Arena to lead the Bulldogs to a 44-42 win over Tanner and the school’s first state title.
    The 6-foot-3 Striplin, who earned MVP honors for the Class 2A state tourney, and teammate TaMyya Hilliard dominated the inside to give first-year head coach Karie Striplin’s Bulldogs (31-2) a 48-38 rebounding advantage for the game. Hilliard, who had six points, also cleared 15 rebounds. Point guard Alexa Boutwell scored 15 points, including 7-of-8 at the foul line and a key lay-up in the final minute that gave Geneva County an important three-point lead.
      Tanner (28-3), coached by Larry Greene, was led by Jessika Milton’s 13 points, five steals and five assists. Nahri’yah Timmons added 11 points and Faith Franklin pulled down 10 rebounds. Kirstin Brown also had eight rebounds, seven points and six steals.
     The game was the final one for Tanner’s head coach. He is retiring after 20 seasons at Tanner with more than 500 wins and one state title (2011). 
     Championship games for Classes 3A and 4A are scheduled for today with Classes 5A, 6A and 7A playing championship games at Legacy Arena Saturday.  All finals are being televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
