Class 1A Boys’ Championship Sacred Heart Catholic 82, South Lamar 59

    BIRMINGHAM – Sacred Heart Catholic captured its third Class 1A state boys’ championship in a row Thursday night beating South Lamar 82-59 at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
    South Lamar (25-8), coached by Chris Tucker, battled the Cardinals (29-8) toe-to-toe for the first two quarters and trailed by four 32-28 at intermission. The intense Sacred Heart pressure finally started to takes it toll in the second half as Coach Ralpheal Graves’ team outscored the Stallions 50-31.
    Dionte Wood, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 27 points, four assists, five steals, four blocked shots and six rebounds to earn MVP honors for the Cardinals. Dontavis Heath scored 17 points and Murdock Simmons had 16. Simmons also had five steals and Heath had four. Kevion Nolan also scored nine points and had six assists.
     Leading South Lamar was junior guard Chase Gore. He scored 21 points with three 3point goals, three assists and four rebounds. Carson Lindsey chipped in 14 points and Malik Cox had nine. Cox also had 10 rebounds and Lindsey had eight.
      Championship games for Classes 2A, 3A and 4A will be played Friday at Legacy Arena. Classes 5A, 6A and 7A will play championship games on Saturday.  All finals will be televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
