Class 7A Boys Semifinals Mountain Brook 52, McGill-Toolen 41

    Sophomore  forward Trendon Watford scored 22 points and cleared 19 rebounds Thursday as Mountain Brook beat defending state champion McGill-Toolen Catholic 52-41 in the Class 7A boys’ semifinals of the 95th annual AHSAA State Basketball Tournament being held at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
    The win propelled Coach Bucky McMillan’s Spartans (30-5) into the state finals Saturday afternoon at 5:45 p.m. The 7A boys’ and girls’ finals will be shown over the Raycom Network live on WBRC TV 6’s main channel as well as Raycom Network D-2 stations across the start.
     Mountain Brook and McGill-Toolen (24-10) fought tooth-and-nail from start to finish. The Spartans outscored the Yellow Jackets, coached by Phillip Murphy, 11-3 in the final three minutes to seal the win.
    Ben McCool added nine points for the Spartans, and Sean Elmore had eight.
    Carlton Martial had 13 points and Manny Patrick had 11 to lead the Jackets.
     The Class 1A girls’ championship game between defending champ Spring Garden and R.A. Hubbard will be at 4 p.m., tonight, and the Class 1A boys’ title game will close out the day at 5:45 p.m. with two-time defending champion Sacred Heart Catholic taking on South Lamar.
       Championships for boys and girls in Classes 2A, 3A and 4A are scheduled for Friday with Class 5A, 6A and 7A finals set for Saturday’s final day.
      All semifinals in the 95th AHSAA State Championships are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network, and the finals will be televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
