Class 5A Boys Semifinals Faith Academy 53, Talladega 40

Faith Academy held Talladega to its lowest output of the season Wednesday night to claim the Class 5A boys’ semifinal battle 53-40 at the 95th AHSAA State Basketball Championships.
The Rams (22-8), coached by Chad Applin, limited the Tigers (26-9) to just 13 field goals and 27.7 per cent from the field for the game to earn a berth in the Class 5A championship game Saturday at the BJCC Legacy Arena versus Mae Jemison at 10:45 a.m.
Faith met J.O. Johnson in the 5A finals last season, falling 71-50. Johnson, coached by Jack Doss, was closed last year and the students now attend the new school Mae Jemison, which is coached by Doss and is in the finals in its first year.
Guard Michael McGowan had 20 points for the Rams Wednesday night. He also had nine rebounds.  Logan Foutz added 19 points, five rebounds and had five steals. Kaleb Jackson chipped in seven points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Talladega, coached by Chucky Miller, was led by Jae-lyn Russ’ 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Robert Houston had eight points and eight rebounds,  Fred Dickerson and Jarvius McKenzie had seven points each.
The 2017 AHSAA State Basketball Championships continues Thursday with Class 7A girls’ and boys’ semifinals in the early session that gets underway at 9 a.m. The Class 1A girls’ championship game between defending champ Spring Garden and R.A. Hubbard will be at 4 p.m., and the Class 1A boys’ title game will close out the day at 5:45 p.m. with two-time defending champion Sacred Heart    Catholic taking on South Lamar.
Championships for boys and girls in Classes 2A, 3A and 4A are scheduled for Friday with Class 5A, 6A and 7A finals set for Saturday’s final day.
All semifinals are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network, and the finals will be televised live and live-streamed by Raycom Sports. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting all games over its statewide radio network and internet link.
