Class 1A Boys Semifinals South Lamar 80, Cornerstone 67

    South Lamar (21-8) jumped to a quick lead Monday morning in its Class 1A boys’ semifinal battle with Cornerstone of Birmingham then had to claw from behind with a big fourth quarter as the Stallions advanced to the state finals with an 80-67 win.
    South Lamar will play in the finals Thursday afternoon at 5:45 p.m.
     Chase Gore and Malik Cox finished with 23 and 20 points, respectively, sparking Coach Chris Tucker’s Stallions to a 10-0 lead early and a 25-9 advantage in the final eight minutes. In between, however, Coach Ronald Steele’s Eagles (15-10) outscored South Lamar 43-32 to take a 58-55 lead into the fourth period.
     Gore had two 3-point goals, was 9-of-11 at the foul line, and had six rebounds and four assists. Cox, who had a game-high 15 rebounds, was 8-of-10 at the foul line. Carson Lindsey added 15 points, four assists and four steals.
    Cornerstone’s Darryl Grayson nailed six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Kelton Wilson added 12 points and John Stanford had 11.
    South Lamar reached the finals on the 25th anniversary of the Stallions’ only state championship won in 1992.
