Spain Park Boys, Southside-Gadsden Girls Claim AHSAA State Bowling Titles

    PELHAM – Spain Park High School’s boys posted a 1,036 in the championship match Friday to beat rival Vestavia Hills 1,036-899 and won the Jaguars’ second straight AHSAA State Bowling championship at Oak Mountain Lanes.
   Southside-Gadsden swept the girls’ competition with four straight wins Friday. Coach Zach Blume’s Panthers downed Hartselle 806-647 in the finals as Southside captured its first state title. The AHSAA bowling program completed its second year as a championship sport.
    Southside’s lineup in the finals consisted of Cheyanne Bohannon, Grace Ann Clontz, Jennifer Clontz, Emily Garmon, Ashlee Hull, Jakiia Mostella and Selena Smith. The Panthers posted scores of 156, 200, 161, 142 and 147 for its 806 total in the finals. The champions also defeated Etowah 815-796 in the semifinals, defending champion Sparkman 810-703 in the quarterfinals and Foley 712-521 in the first round. Each match consisted of five Baker Format games.
    Hartselle beat Gulf Shores 700-684 in the first round, Vestavia Hills 755-707 in the quarterfinals and top seed Thompson 832-731 in the semifinals. Coach Tanya Lybarger’s lineup included Kailee Adcock, Callie Burks, Emily Clemons, Crabs Compton, Emily Cowart, Brooklyn Hamblin, Katie Henry and Reagan Martin.
    The closest match of the girls’ competition was Thompson’s second-round win over Spain Park in the second round, 712 to 711. The top individual game of the girls’ competition was Southside’s 200 in the second game of the final match.
Spain Park Repeats as AHSAA Boys’ Champs
   
Coach C.J. Hawkins’ Jaguars averaged 987.25 pins per match while posting a 4-0 record on the final day Friday.  Her lineup of Ryan Caraway, Tucker Contormo, Brady Cooper, Devin Dowdle, Andrew Harris, Jalen Johnson, Matthew Plexico and Wyatt Lumsden posted a final-match total of 237-133-197-258-211 for their 1,036 total. Spain Park beat Vestavia Hills, which averaged 989.25 for the day, had rounds of 1,050, 1,005 and 1,003 prior to the finals.
    Spain Park also beat Indian Springs 1,002-755 in the first round, Grissom, 889-820 in the quarterfinals, Hewitt-Trussville 1,022-927 in the semifinals. Vestavia, coached by Debra Broome, listed Barrett Blackwood, Will Evans, Sam Lawhorn, Boris Lu, Mason Maners, Cameron Monistere, Beau Reed and Travis Saunders.
    Hewitt-Trussville had the high game of the day with a 267 in its first-round 1,010-807 win over Mary Montgomery in the first round. Vestavia Hills also bowled a 256 in its first-round win over Northview and a 243 in its second-round win over Thompson. Spain Park’s 258 in the fourth game of the finals was the Jags’ best game and the second highest total for the boys on the day.
