Mae Jemison downed Lee-Huntsville 68-37 Friday night and handed Coach Jack Doss another milestone win in his prep basketball coaching career – now in its 37th year. John Petty scored 17 points as Doss’s Jaguars (22-4) recorded Doss’s 800th career win.
Doss, who guided J.O. Johnson to the Class 5A state championship last season to become the only boys’ basketball coach in the AHSAA to lead teams to nine state titles, is now 800-329 overall. Johnson became Mae Jemison this school year.
Doss won two state titles at Hayes High School in Birmingham, five at Butler High School in Huntsville and two at J.O. Johnson. Hayes is now a middle school and Butler is now closed. He is the fourth boys’ coach in AHSAA history to win 800 games. Eugene Mason of R.C. Hatch closed his career with 919 wins, Cap Brown of Parker won 890 and Willie Scoggins of Ramsay won 864.
Mason, Brown and Scoggins are now deceased. Including Doss, all four are in the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.
