Thompson High School’s Lady Warriors, coached by Chris Hollingsworth, won four matches Friday in the South Regional Bowling championship bracket at Foley’s Gulf Bowl to claim the regional title for the second year in a row. All matches consisted of five Baker format games.
Stanhope Elmore also won the South Regional boys’ bowling championship for the second year in a row. Capturing North Regional tourney titles at Tuscaloosa’s Leland Lanes were Southside-Gadsden’s girls and James Clemens’ boys. James Clemens swept both the boys’ and girls’ regional championships last season.
The top eight girls’ teams and top eight boys’ teams in Friday’s championship elimination bracket from each regional advanced to earn a berth in the second annual AHSAA State Bowling Championships set for Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes Jan. 26-27. Defending state champions are Spain Park’s boys and Sparkman’s girls. Both are among the qualifiers from regional tourney competition.
Thompson beat Shelby County rival Pelham 741 to 615 in the South girls’ finals Friday. Thompson also beat Houston Academy, Foley and Vestavia Hills to reach the championship match. Pelham downed Spanish Fort, Mary Montgomery and Spain Park to advance to the finals.
Coach Dawn Kelly’s Stanhope Elmore Mustangs posted a 928 total in the finals, and Auburn had 859.
Southside-Gadsden, coached by Zach Blume, won a close match over defending North Regional champion James Clemens in the North girls’ finals, 784 to 757. In the North Regional boy’s finals, James Clemens, coached by Anthony Pickard, won 947 to 776 over Etowah.
The closest match of the day was the North boys’ quarterfinal win by Lincoln, which posted a two-pin victory over East Limestone, 892-890.
Top team scores for the day at the South Regional were Vestavia Hills’ 824 pins in a first-round girls’ win over Satsuma, and Vestavia Hills’ 986 in its first-round boys’ win, also over Satsuma. In the North Regional, top match score for the girls was Etowah’s 797 in a quarterfinal win over Pinson Valley. The best boys’ match total was James Clemens’ 947 in the finals.
