Defending Champions in Regional Field as AHSAA Bowling Playoffs Get Underway Thursday

  MONTGOMERY – The second annual AHSAA State Boys’ and Girls” Bowling Championships get underway Thursday, Jan. 19, with Regional Tourneys at Gulf Lanes in Foley (South) and Leland Lanes in Tuscaloosa (North).
    A total of 16 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams will be competing in each regional with the top eight advancing to the state tournament at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham next week, Jan. 26-27.
   Regional tourneys conclude Friday, Jan. 20. The first round gets underway at 9 a.m., for girls and 2 p.m., for boys on Thursday and will consist of 10-pin traditional play with the team totals seeding the schools for the final round on Friday. Teams will be placed in the 16-team elimination bracket on Friday with winners advancing to the finals. Girls’ play starts at 8 a.m., and boys’ play will begin at 10:30 a.m. Finals are set for 5:30 p.m. for both divisions. Teams will bowl five Baker rounds in each match on Friday.
    The top eight teams will advance to the state tournament at Pelham.
     Stanhope Elmore (South) and James Clemens (North) won the boys’ regional tournaments last year. Thompson (South) and James Clemens (North) won the girls’ regional titles.   Spain Park downed Stanhope Elmore 1,836 to 1,576 in the boys’ state finals at Pelham, and Sparkman beat James Clemens 1,488 to 1,269 to win the girls’ state championship.
   Each are back this year to defend their titles. Also back is Gadsden City junior Jon Kilgo, who rolled the first and only 300 game in AHSAA history as a sophomore in the first round of the state tournament at Pelham last season.
   Schools competed in area play during the regular season with the winner and runner-up advancing to each respective regional tourney.
