MONTGOMERY – Senior running back Jamarius Henderson rushed for 283 yards on offense and had 18 tackles on defense as Dale County (12-0) beat Geneva 34-6 to advance to this week’s quarterfinals of the AHSAA Class 3A state football playoffs.
Henderson, who headlines AHSAA Prep Spotlight for playoff round two, also had 308 yards rushing and five TDs on just 10 carries in a 62-20 first-round win over Prattville Christian. He currently has 2,712 yards rushing on the season and is just 372 yards shy of the AHSAA single-season state rushing record of 3,083 yards set by Kendal Gibson of Aliceville in 2000 in 15 games.
Two others cracked 3,000 yards--Lee Cagle of Lynn with 3,018 yards in 15 games in 1996 and Sherman Williams of Blount with 3,004 in 1990 – also in 15 games.
Henderson’s current total in his 12 games this season currently ranks 11th all time. He had 2,294 yards and 34 touchdowns on 208 carries in 13 games last season.
He also had a quarterback sack from his linebacker position in the second-round win and has recorded 32 tackles in the two 2014 playoff games. He has also rushed 31 times for 591 yards with nine
scored (one coming on a 31-yard reception) in the two games.
This week Coach Pate Harrison’s Warriors, 23-1 the last two seasons, put their unbeaten record on the line at home against another undefeated team when Montgomery Academy (12-0) visits Midland City Friday. The Eagles beat T.R. Miller 30-28 last week.
One other playoff game pits two unbeaten teams, ironically, at nearby Skipperville where another Dale County school, G.W. Long (11-0), hosts Elba. Kickoffs for all playoff games are Friday night t 7 p.m.

A total of nine NFHS TV Network football playoff games will be live-streamed Friday including: Brantley at Billingsley (1A); Fyffe at Tanner (2A); Montgomery Academy at Dale County (3A); Madison Academy at Walter Wellborn (3A); Guntersville at Pleasant Grove (5A): Florence at Gardendale (6A); Saraland at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (6A); Prattville at Foley (7A); and Gadsden City at Hoover (7A). The Saraland-Hillcrest contest will be produced by both schools.
In other highlights reported from week 2 of the state playoffs:
KRISTIAN JONES, HACKLEBURG: Had 24 carries for 285 yards, four touchdowns and added a pair of 2-point conversions, four touchdowns and two 2-point conversions in the Panthers’ Class 1A 56-48 playoff loss to Cedar Bluff before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter with an injury. He also had 11 tackles on defense.
D’SHAWN FIFE, CEDAR BLUFF: Rushed for 224 yards on 34 carries and scored six touchdowns (8, 3, 3, 4, 33, 14 yards) in the Tigers' 56-48 Class 1A victory over Hackleburg. In two playoff games this season, Fife has 539 rushing yards and 10 TDs.
TYLER GURLEY, MADISON COUNTY: Ran 15 times for 101 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winning 11-yard score in overtime, to lift the Tigers to a 35-28 Class 5A playoff win over Parker. He also completed 10-of-13 passes for 106 yards.
GABE FORD, GADSDEN CITY: Finished with 215 combined yards and three touchdowns in the Titans’ 45-28 Class 7A win over Oak Mountain. Ford rushed 15 times for 143 yards and touchdown runs of 4 and 57 yards and also caught three passes for 72 yards and a 49-yard score.
STEFAN CALDWELL, ELBA: Rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and caught a 9-yard pass to help unbeaten Elba (12-0) beat Sweet Water 42-20 in the Class 2A playoffs. He also had a key quarterback sack for a 14-yard loss to help seal the win.
JORDAN BENTLEY, GUNTERSVILLE: Had 44 carries for 178 yards and a 3-yard touchdown in a 10-7 Class 5A playoff victory over Ramsay.
JAMEL GRACE, FLOMATON: Rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries in a 43-32 Class 2A victory over Cottonwood.
CHADARARIUS TOWNSEND, TANNER: Scored three touchdowns on runs of 25, 56 and 62 yards and finished with 240 yards on 19 carries as the defending Class 2A state champs beat Randolph County 41-14.
SHAKEITH TYES, CALERA: Had 212 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 21 carries in the Eagles’ 34-31, double-overtime Class 5A loss to Greenville.
ZACH SIMBECK, LAUDERDALE COUNTY: Rushed for 203 yards and two TDs in a 17-14 Class 3A playoff loss to Glencoe. Simbeck had TD runs of 55 and 56 yards.
SHAQUILLE TERRY, McADORY: Ran for 193 yards on 11 carries as the undefeated Yellow Jackets posted a 40-38 Class 6A victory over Oxford.
DeANTHONY HOLCOMBE, WASHINGTON COUNTY: Ran for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries as the unbeaten Bulldogs (12-0) beat Geneva County 35-14 in the 2A playoffs.
ISAIAH LEWIS, FOLEY: Ran for 170 yards on 23 carries in a 34-7 Class 7A victory over arch-rival Fairhope.
TYLER SIMS, SARALAND: Ran for 152 yards on nine carries with an 85-yard TD as the Spartans held off Opelika 27-21 in overtime in the 6A state playoffs.
KERRYON JOHNSON, MADISON ACADEMY: Rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, caught a 47-yard TD pass and returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown in a 42-20 Class 3A victory over Piedmont. His rushing TDs covered 1 and 59 yards.
KERVAE QUALLS, COLBERT COUNTY: Rushed for 148 yards, including TD runs of 36, 43 and 42 yards as the Indians beat Plainview 34-7 in the 3A playoffs.
DE'JUAN FEAGAN, PLEASANT GROVE: Helped the Spartans advance to the third round of the 5A playoffs with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, 93 yards passing and another touchdown in a 28-10 victory over Lincoln.
CHASE TROTTER, CORDOVA: Completed 14-of-19 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns (7, 59, 60 and 67 yards) as the Blue Devils beat Cleburne County 35-34 in the Class 4A playoffs. He also scored the game-winning TD on a 1-yard sneak with 1:59 remaining.
AARON POLLARD, MARION COUNTY: Was 15-of-27 passing for 298 yards and three touchdowns (22, 42 and 66 yards) as the Red Raiders beat previously unbeaten Donoho 29-18 in the Class 1A playoffs.
BRANDON SIMMONS, GREENVILLE: Completed 24-of-49 passes for 289 yards and five touchdowns in a 34-31, double-overtime Class 5A victory over Calera.
BLAKE HAWKINS, FLORENCE: Completed 15-of-22 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns (17, 14, 40 and 33 yards) and added one TD rushing in the Falcons’ 43-21 Class 6A triumph over Shades Valley.
MATTHEW CHRISTIAN, OPELIKA: Completed 26-of-31 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-21 overtime loss to Saraland. He had touchdown throws of 17, 29 and 8 yards and finished the season with 157 straight pass attempts without an interception.
CARL WILLIAMS, B.C. RAIN: Passed for three touchdowns and rushed for three to account for six scores as B.C. Rain (6-6) advanced to the third round of the Class 5A playoff with a 50-14 win over Charles Henderson.
JOSH DECKER, CEDAR BLUFF: Completed 8-of-20 pass attempts for 219 yards and a 53-yard touchdown in the Class 1A Tigers' 56-48 win over Hackleburg.
JARED WALLACE, MARION COUNTY: Hauled in five receptions for 171 yards and three touchdowns (22 and 66 yards) in a 29-18 Class 1A win over Donoho. Teammate Braden Pyron also had seven catches for 97 yards and a 42-yard TD.
TYLER CRUMPTON, PHILLIPS: Caught 10 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns (7, 15 & 25 yards) in a 40-34 Class 1A loss to undefeated Hubbertville.
LEONARD WOOD, HOOVER: Finished with four catches for 169 yards and a touchdown in a 42-7 Class 7A Bucs victory over Tuscaloosa County.
ASHTON GAY, OAKMAN: Caught seven passes for 160 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcats' 24-23 Class 3A loss to Walter Wellborn.
D.J. CHAPMAN, CEDAR BLUFF: Caught four passes for 127 yards and a 53-yard touchdown as the Tigers (7-5) advanced in the 1A playoffs with a 56-48 win over Hackleburg.
SETH KNOTTS, PRATTVILLE: Caught four passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-7 Class 7A victory over Central-Phenix City.
AUSTIN HICKS, GARDENDALE: Caught six passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 16 yards for another score as the Rockets advanced in the 6A playoffs with its 35-14 win over Homewood.
TREVOR CARVIN, FOLEY: Intercepted a Fairhope pass on the final play of the first half and ran it back 95 yards for a momentum-changing score as Foley beat region foe Fairhope 34-7 in the 7A playoffs.
XAVIUS COLEMAN, BRANTLEY: Had 15 tackles with three sacks in a 20-12 victory Class 1A over Linden.
GREENE, SWEET WATER: Had 14 tackles in 42-20 Class 2A loss to Elba.
STEVEN CROWDER, GARDENDALE: Managed 10 tackles and two sacks in a 35-14 Class 6A victory over Homewood.
WADE CASTLE, DALE COUNTY: Had 11 tackles and also caught a 51-yard touchdown pass on offense in Dale County’s 34-6 Class 3A win over Geneva.
JIM RICHARDS, G.W. LONG: Returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown, had an interception and seven tackles in the Rebels' 44-12 Class 2A win over Leroy. Teammate Bo Walding also had seven tackles including three sacks and rushed for three touchdowns on offense.
NICKY ERWIN AND ERNESTO CORDOVA: Tackled a Ramsay runner in the end zone for a safety to seal the unbeaten Wildcats’ Class 5A 10-7 playoff win over the Rams.
ROSS JOHNSON, CEDAR BLUFF: Returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Tigers' 56-48 Class 1A victory over Hackleburg.
JIMMY MASSEY, MONTGOMERY ACADEMY: Kicked three field goals, including a 33-yarder with 1:21 to play, to lift the unbeaten Eagles (12-0) to a 30-28 win over T.R. Miller in the Class 3A state playoffs.
