3 Defending Champions Survive 3rd Round Of AHSAA State Football Playoffs

     MONTGOMERY – Three defending state champions and nine undefeated teams emerged from the third round of the AHSAA State Football Playoffs Friday night.
     McGill-Toolen Catholic (13-0) beat Central-Phenix City 35-21 in the Class 7A semifinals to advance to the Super 7 state championship game at Jordan-Hare Stadium Nov. 30. Hoover (11-2) beat Gadsden City in the other semifinal 42-14 to set up the final game.
    The other six classes completed quarterfinal rounds with winners advancing to the semifinals this Friday, Nov. 25, with all kickoffs set for 7 p.m. 
    In Class 1A, defending champ Maplesville (12-0) advanced to the semifinals to face Linden (13-0) with a 60-34 victory Sweet Water. Linden beat Georgiana 52-12.
    In Class 3A, defending state champion Piedmont (13-0) extended its current winning streak to 23 games with a 52-28 win over Weaver. The Bulldogs will host Calhoun County and Region 5 rival Ohatchee (12-1) Friday night in the semis in a much anticipated rematch.
    Defending Class 2A champ Elba lost 50-44 to Aliceville (12-1), defending 5A state champ St. Paul’s Episcopal lost to Region 1 rival Jackson 35-9, and defending 6A state champ Spanish Fort was beaten 21-17 by Opelika in a battle of head-coaching brothers. Brian Blackmon got the upper hand this time and Ben Blackmon won last year’s game on the way to a perfect 15-0 season.
    This week’s slate includes 12 semifinal games. All winners will advance to the Super 7 State championships at Auburn Nov. 30-Dec.1-2. 
      Unbeaten teams by class in the playoffs include:
(Class 1A) Maplesville (12-0); Linden (13-0), Addison (13-0); (Class 2A) G.W. Long (12-0); Fyffe (13-0); (Class 3A) Gordo (13-0); Piedmont (13-0); (Class 6A) Park Crossing (13-0); (Class 7A) McGill-Toolen Catholic (13-0).
    Advancing to the next round are 20 region champions, four region second seeds, one third seed and one fourth seed.
    Hokes Bluff (9-4), the fourth seed in Class 4A, Region 5, beat the Region 4 champ Cherokee County6 28-21 to earn the right to host Madison Academy (10-3) Friday.  Jackson (9-3), the third seed in Class 5A, Region 1, advanced by knocking off St. Paul’s.
    Raycom Media will announce the contest to be featured next Friday on the Raycom/AHSAA Playoff Game of the Week. The NFHS Network also plans to live-stream several games produced by member schools belonging to the NFHS Network School Broadcast Program. Those games will be announced early next week and will be listed at
www.nfhsnetwork.net.
