MONTGOMERY –  The NFHS Network School Broadcast Programs plan to live-stream at least 16 football games Friday night, one basketball game Thursday night and the 61st AHSAA State Cross Country Championships Saturday, the NFHS Network announced Thursday.
Cullman High School’s School Broadcast Program, directed by John Drake, will live-stream all 12 cross country championship races at Oakville Indian Mounds and Museum course near Moulton Saturday. The competition gets underway at 8:30 a.m. with the Class 5A girls’ competition, followed by Class 4A boys at 8:50 a.m.; Class 7A girls at 9:10; Class 5A Boys at 9:30; Class 4A Girls at 9:50; Class 7A Boys at 10:10; Class 3A Girls at 10:30; Class 6A Boys at 10:50; Class 1A-2A Girls at 11:10; Class 3A Boys at 11:30; Class 6A Girls at 11:50; and Class 1A-2A Boys at 12:10 p.m.
Defending state champions include: (GIRLS) Class 1A/2A – St. Bernard; Class 3A – Pleasant Valley; Class 4A – Wilson; Class 5A – Lawrence County; Class 6A – John Carroll Catholic; and Class 7A – Mountain Brook. (BOYS) Class 1A/2A – Cold Springs; Class 3A – American Christian; Class 4A – Trinity Presbyterian; Class 5A – Lawrence County; Class 6A – Homewood; Class 7A – Auburn.
Three young runners will be vying for their third straight individual state titles in the girls’ competition. Montgomery Catholic sophomore Amaris Tynismaa set the AHSAA course record in 2014 as an eighth grader when she ran the 5,000-meter race in 17:03.04. She clocked 17:52.25 last year to win the 4A title for the second time and will be the favorite in the field Saturday.
St. Bernard sophomore Ivy Edge won the 1A-2A races in 2014 and 2015 as well, and St. Paul’s Episcopal freshman Isabel Valenzuela is back seeking the 5A individual championship for the third straight year. Tynismaa’s times have been the fastest overall in the last two years’ of state-meet competition.
None of the boys’ champions from 2015 are returning.
Andalusia (10-1) is at defending Class 4A state champion Leeds (9-2) to headline the football playoff games being live-streamed Friday night. Three of the four Class 7A quarterfinal games are also being live-streamed with defending state champion McGill-Toolen Catholic (11-0) and Enterprise (10-1) each producing their contest through the NFHS School Broadcast Program.
Four class 6A games are scheduled two in Class 5A, two in Class 4A, three in Class 2A and one in Class 1A.
