HOOVER – Senior Erin Hines totaled 4,625 points to captured the 2016 AHSAA State Heptathlon Championship at Hoover High School Tuesday.
Hines trailed first-day leader Charlotte Krause of St. Paul’s Episcopal by 20 points heading into Tuesday’s final three events of the 25th annual event. She won the long-jump competition with a leap of 18 feet, 5 ¾ inches and closed with a solid 2:30.98 in the 800 meters to win over runner-up Callie Jones of Cottage Hill Christian (4,558) by 67 points.
Caroline Lawrence of Homewood was third (4,056) and Krause was fourth (4,024). Michelle Roca of McGill-Toolen (3,873) rounded out the top five. Finishing out the top 10 were Megan Zuck of Hartselle (3,774), Ann Mosely Whitsett of Homewood (3,757), Baylee Porch of Arab (3,744), Elyssa Griffin of Homewood (3,667) and Madison Kirkwood, also of Homewood (3,552).
Jones won the javelin competition with a winning throw of 150 feet, 11 inches, 30 feet farther than her closest competition. Savannah McMillon of Walker clocked 2:19.09 in the 800-meter run to win that event over runner-up Whitsett, who crossed the finish line in 2:22.71 seconds. Griffin had the second best long jump behind Hines (18-03.75).
The AHSAA 63rd State Decathlon Championships were still underway Tuesday afternoon. Northside’s Andrew Robertson was the first-day leader with 3,305 points.
