CLASS 6A GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

JOHN CARROLL CATHOLIC 1, NORTHRIDGE 0

John Carroll Catholic High School sophomore forward  Clair Davies posted a goal with 2:05 remaining in the second half Saturday afternoon to lift the Lady Cavaliers (23-2-3) to a 1-0 win over Northridge in the Class 6A girls’ soccer finals of the 2016 AHSAA State Soccer Championships.
It was John Carroll’s third straight state girls’ championship.
Davies, who earned 6A Championship MVP, took a pass from senior forward Lindsey Flemming and nailed the shot that held Coach Chase Zanaty’s team avoid overtime in what had been a spirited scoreless battle for the first 77:55.
John Carroll took 17 shots to just five for Northridge (21-4-0), including 11 shots on goal to just three for Coach Carter Hill’s Jaguars. It was Northridge’s defense that kept the Tuscaloosa team close down to the wire. Goalkeeper Carmen Smith had two saves.
John Carroll now has four girls’ state soccer titles to their credit with championships also won in 2000, 2014 and 2015. The four titles ranks the Lady Cavaliers tied with Spain Park for fifth overall in the AHSAA state record book.  Fort Payne and Briarwood Christian lead with eight each. Grissom and Montgomery Academy have won five apiece.
