CLASS 4A/5A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

HELENA 4, RANDOLPH 0

The Helena High School Huskies captured the school’s first state championship Friday night defeating defending state champion Randolph 4-0 in the Class 4A/5A championship match of the 2016 AHSAA State Soccer Championships at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.
The championship came in just the second year of the Shelby County school’s existence. It opened its doors at the beginning of the 2014-15 school  year.  The Huskies baseball team reached the 5A finals last spring. The girls’ soccer team also reached the 2016 semifinals.
Coach Zach Morgan’s Huskies (18-7-2) took control of the scoreless match with two goals in a five-minute span late in the first half.  Senior defender Yeltsin Canales scored at 30 minutes into the contest to give Helena a 1-0 lead.  Class 4A/5A Championship MVP Vincent Navaez scored the first of his two goals at 35 minutes as Helena cruised into intermission leading 2-0.
Navaez, a freshman,  scored at 50:38 of the second stretching the lead to 3-0, and senior midfielder Michael Humphrey closed out the scoring with a goal at 73:36.
The Huskies defense allowed only two hosts by Randolph. The Raiders are coached by Alex Tomlinson.
The championship marked the 25th year of the AHSAA State Soccer Championships, which began in 1991.  Championships continue Saturday at John Hunt Soccer Complex with Class 7A girls’ and Class 6A boys’ state championship matches at 10 a.m., followed by Class 7A boys’ and Class 6A girls’ finals at 12:30 p.m.
All finals are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network. Viewers can access at http://www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/ahsaa.
