CLASS 1A/3A GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC 4, WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 1
     
Holy Spirit Catholic High School junior Jordan Richmond scored four goals Friday night to lead the unbeaten Lady Titans to a 4-0 victory over previously undefeated Westbrook Christian in the Class 1A/3A girls’ finals of the 2016 AHSAA State Soccer Championships at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex.
     The soccer championship was the first in AHSAA history for Coach Arthur Howington’s girls.
     Holy Spirit (17-0-0) took the lead for good at 39:13 of the first half when Richmond, named the Class 1A/3A State Championship MVP,  scored her first goal of the night. She added a quick goal 3:45 into the second half to make it 2-0.  Westbrook Christian (24-1-0) , coached by Joel Hawbaker, cut the lead to one with a goal by junior forward Olivia Strickland 10 minutes later.
    Richmond closed out the scoring with two goals in the final 14 minutes to seal the victory. She wasnear perfect going  4-of-5 with shots on goal. Holy Spirit goalkeeper Blakley Jones had four saves for the Titans.  Mattie Loyd had three saves for the Warriors.
    The championship marked the 25th year of the AHSAA State Soccer Championships, which began in 1991.  Championships continue Saturday at John Hunt Soccer Complex with Class 7A girls’ and Class 6A boys’ state championship matches at 10 a.m., followed by Class 7A boys’ and Class 6A girls’ finals at 12:30 p.m.
