VESTAVIA HILLS 5, HUNTSVILLE 1
Vestavia Hills scored three goals in the first half and cruised to a 5-1 victory over Huntsville Friday afternoon in the Class 7A girls’ semifinals of the 25th annual AHSAA State Soccer Championships at John Hunt Soccer Complex.
The Rebels (22-2-0) advanced to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship match versus Auburn with the win. All finals are being live-streamed over the NFHS Network.
Senior midfielder Sophia Kamburis scored two goals, one in each half, for Coach Brigid Littleton’s squad. Sophomore Faith Hamburg, senior Kennedy Hicks and sophomore Alli Glaze also scored goals for Vestavia Hills.
Sophomore MacKenzie Johnston tallied the goal for Huntsville (16-9-1), coached by Ivy Robinson.
Vestavia goalkeeper Lauren Rossell had three saves.
AUBURN 1, McGILL-TOOLEN 0
Coach Chris Blight’s Tigers scored the match’s only goal at the 52:59 mark in the second half en route to a 1-0 girls’ Class 7A semifinal victory over McGill-Toolen (21-4-0) Friday.
Hannah DeWeese notched the goal lifting her short kick from the left side of the goal just over the outstretched arms of McGill-Toolen goalkeeper Eva Knapstein into the right corner of the net. Both teams played outstanding defense with Auburn attempting four shots on goal and the Jackets attempting three.
Saturday’s championship appearance will be the second in a row for Auburn. The Tigers lost 2-1 to Oak Mountain in last year’s finals – which was tied through two overtimes and ended in a shootout.
