Cullman High School scored once in each half to defeat Pelham 2-0 Friday and clinched a berth in the Class 6A boys’ finals of 2016 AHSAA State Soccer Championships. The 25th annual AHSAA State Soccer Tournament is being held at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex.
The Bearcats (23-4-2) will face Daphne (16-5-5) Saturday at 10 a.m. Saturday. All championship matches are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.
Senior Ben Walker scored the first goal at 29:15 in the first half of Friday’s semifinals. Fellow senior Guilherme Albuquerque notched the final goal at 74:19 in the match to close out the scoring. Kip Potter, the Bearcats’ goalkeeper, had one save as the Cullman defense allowed just three Pelham shot attempts. Braxton Jeffcoat, one of four keepers used by Coach Patrick McDonald’s Panthers, had three saves for Pelham.
DAPHNE 1, NORTHRIDGE 0
Senior midfielder Henok Lee slipped a goal past Northridge just 15:43 into the semifinals and Daphne (16-5-5) made that goal stand as the Trojans advanced to the Class 6A boys’ state soccer finals with the 1-0 win.
Coach Cameron Williams’ team will face Cullman (23-4-2) in Saturday’s 10 a.m. finals at John Hunt Soccer Complex. Daphne keeper Harrison Comerford had three saves, and Jackson Bowers of Northridge had one save for the Jaguars. Head coach Carter Hill coached Northridge’s girls to a 1-0 win in the 6A girls’ semifinals earlier Friday.
