UMS-Wright Sweeps Class 4A-5A State Tennis Championships

       MOBILE  – UMS-Wright High School’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams each won a state championship Wednesday as the AHSAA Class 4A/5A state tennis championships concluded at the Mobile Tennis Center.
       The sweep was the eighth straight for the school – with Coach Meridy Jones’ girls and Coach Rick Cleveland’s boys claiming state titles each year since 2009. The tournament was scheduled to conclude Tuesday afternoon but the boys’ and girls’ No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles finals were played Wednesday.
       The Bulldogs scored 74 points sweeping four singles championships in the boys’ competition and captured the No. 1 doubles competition. Trinity Presbyterian finished second with 56 points and LAMP was third with 34.
      Winning singles titles were seniors Nicholas Anez (No. 1) and Clay Baker (No. 2), sophomore Patrick Kraver (No. 3) and junior Patrick McGowin (No. 4).  Anez, who beat Trinity senior Tyler Vermillion in the singles finals 6-0, 6-1, teamed with Kraver to win the No. 1 doubles title over Vermillion and Charlie Trotman, 6-3, 6-4.
     Sylacauga was selected the Sportsmanship Award recipient.

UMS-Wright Girls Win 5 Singles Titles
     UMS-Wright won five of six singles championships to score 75 points and runner-up Saint James had 54 in the girls’ competition.  St. Paul’s Episcopal was a close third with 52 points and LAMP had 36.
     Claiming the No. 1 singles championship for the Lady Bulldogs was freshman Audrey Sewell, who beat St. Paul’s senior Ann Mason Hunter, 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday morning. Also winning singles titles for UMS were seventh grader Tianna Dixon (No. 2), freshman Martha Williams (No. 3), sophomores Adelaide Bell (No. 5) and Anne Harvey (No. 6).  Sewell and Dixon won the No. 1 doubles title over Saint James senior Clayton Waring and freshman Bea Richardson, winning 6-3, 6-2 in the final match of the tournament Wednesday afternoon. 
    Sylacauga was the Sportsmanship Award recipient for the girls’ division.
