CLASS 7A GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP Jeff Davis 52, McGill-Toolen 38

        Jeff Davis High School of Montgomery took the opening lead on a Tia Manora lay-up  in the first minute of the game and never trailed as the Vols beat McGill-Toolen 52-38 to win their second straight Class 7A state girls’ basketball championship at the BJCC Legacy Arena Saturday.
        The Lady Vols (25-6) remain the only school to own a girls’ state basketball title at the 94th AHSAA State Finals. Jeff Davis also beat McGill-Toolen in last year’s first-ever 7A championship game.
        Coach Lakenya Knight’s Vols relied on a swarming defense and strong inside game to take the win.  Senior Jasmine Walker, a 6-foot-3 center, had 18 points and six rebounds and was named 7A state tourney MVP. Tyesha Wheeler added 12 points, four assists and three steals, and Tia Manora added 11 points and five assists. Ahyiona Vason added six assists, five steals and five points in her role as point guard, and Kayla Jackson had 10 rebounds and six points.
    Ryann Sylvester scored 14 points, canning two 3-pointers, and Shauntai Battle had 11 points for Coach Carla Berry’s Yellow Jackets (31-4). Battle also had five rebounds for McGill-Toolen.
   All championship games were televised live by Raycom Media’s network of stations over their digital 2 stations and broadcast by the AHSAA Radio Network.
