CLASS 5A GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP Wenonah 58, Central-Tuscaloosa 33

        Wenonah High School’s Lady Dragons used a smothering defense to beat Central-Tuscaloosa Saturday morning in the Class 5a girls’ championship game of the 2016 AHSAA State Basketball Finals at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
          The title was the third in a row for Coach Emanuel Bell’s Dragons (33-1) and the seventh overall for the storied Birmingham school’s program.
         Junior Alexus Dye had 12 points and 10 rebounds to earn Class 5A state tourney MVP.  Senior Kaitlyn Rodgers added 12 points, 14 rebounds, six blocked shots and three assists.  Kourtnie Smith also had eight points and Jayla Morrow seven for Wenonah.
        Pacing Central (28-6), coached by Michael Rivers, was paced by Shaunterius Stephens’ 17 rebounds and five points. Latasha Maddix also had 15 rebounds, and Jada Prewitt had seven points.
        The Dragons have been in the state finals four years in a row – winning in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and losing by a single point to Faith Academy in 2013.
    The AHSAA State Finals championships conclude Saturday with Classes 6A and 7A in the afternoon session.
