CLASS 2A BOYS SEMIFINALS Lanett 72, Section 59

    Lanett scored six points in 16 seconds late in the fourth quarter Monday night to nip Section 72-59 in the Class 2A boys’ semifinal game of the 2016 State Basketball Finals at the BJCC Legacy Arena. The victory sends the Panthers (28-6) of Coach Richard Carter into the finals for the first time in his 45-year coaching career.
    The Panthers led 64-59 when Anquaevious Pollard put back a rebound for a bucket with 1:05 to play. Tavaris Geiger followed with a quick steal and lay-up eight seconds later, and Clifford Story picked up Lanett’s 22nd  offensive rebound of the night and scored following another Geiger steal with 49 seconds left to stretch the lead to 70-59.
     Pollard finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds, Geiger added 16 points and five assists. Emmanuel Littles had 10 points and 16 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, to lead the Panthers. Lanett out-rebounded Section 44-18 on the night and was 13-of-14 at the foul line for the game.
   Coach Jamie Pruett’s Lions (26-6) remained close all night thanks to a big offensive effort by forward Caleb Haynes and a superb 3-point shooting effort by Dylan Davis. Haynes had 24 points on a 9-of-12 shooting effort and Davis sand six 3-point goals on just eight tries and finished with 18 points. The Lions had nine treys on the night. Haynes also had six rebounds.
   Lanett will play St. Luke’s Episcopal (23-11) in the 2A boys’ championship game Friday at 10:45 a.m. at the BJCC. Play continues Tuesday with Class 3A tipping off the action at 9 a.m., and Class 4A playing the afternoon session. Classes 6A and 5A play Wednesday and Class 7A semifinals are set for Thursday.
    The 1A girls’ and boys’ finals will be Thursday at 4 and 5:45 p.m. respectively.  Classes 2A, 3A and 4A play girls’ and boys’ championships Friday while the State Finals conclude Saturday with Classes 5A, 6A and 7A championship games.
