Auburn, Winfield, Hoover, Pelham, St. Paul’s and American Christian Repeat as State Champs at 47th AHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM – Auburn, Opelika, Northside and Winfield claimed boys’ championships and Hoover, Pelham, St. Paul’s Episcopal and American Christian captured girls’ championships as the 47th AHSAA State Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Eighteen state records were broken Saturday  – including three by junior track sensation Trey Cunningham of Winfield, who won four events for 40 points as Coach Steve Reaves’ Pirates won their second consecutive Class 1A-3A state boys’ indoor title.
Winfield posted 122 points to beat runner-up American Christian by 26.50 points. Coach Charles Tiller’s Patriots tallied 93.50 point and his girls captured their second straight 1A-3A crown with 86.33 points. Bayside Academy finished second in the girls’ competition with 58.50 points, and Winfield was a close third with 54.50.
Auburn and Hoover repeated as Class 7A boys’ and girls’ state champs, respectively. Coach Johnny Johnson’s Tigers totaled 110.50 points to runner-up Hoover’s 64. Coach Devon Hind’s Lady Bucs won their third state crown in a row and fourth in five years with 126 points – 43 better than runner-up James Clemens’ 83.
Pelham’s girls captured their second Class 6A title in a row posting 98 points to beat runner-up Homewood (88). Opelika won its first boys’ 6A indoor championship with a meet-high 138.50 points. Northridge was second with 62.
Northside won its first boys’ state indoor title winning the Class 4A-5A championship with 70.50 points. Ramsay was as close second with 65.  St. Paul’s Episcopal won the Class 4A-5A girls’ crown with 108 points. It was the 23rd overall for Coach Jim Tate’s Saints, an AHSAA state record.
Cunningham continued his assault of the AHSAA indoor state track record book with wins in the 400, long jump, 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles for a meet high 40 points. He ran a 1A-3A state record 50.30 seconds to edge American Christian’s Noah Karr (50.58) at the finish line to win the 400-meter dash to start his day Saturday. Maurice Holt of St. Paul’s held the old record (50.55), setting the standard 33 years ago in 1984.
Cunningham won the 1A-3A 60-meter hurdles with a winning time of 7.84 seconds. He set the class record on Friday in the prelims with a 7.83 time and established the CrossPlex overall record during the regular season with a 7.76 time to rank him first nationally this season. And he closed out his incredible meet performance with 6.98 time in the 60-meter dash for his fourth record of 2016.
The Pirates standout also recorded a winning leap of 23 feet, 4 inches to set the Class 1A-3A state indoor record – erasing the 37-year-old mark (22-3 3/4) set by Derrell Washington of Calhoun in 1980.
In the Class 7A girls’ 400-meter dash, three runners bettered the classification record in what turned out to be one of the top races of the 2016 meet.  Oak Mountain’s Nicole Payne clocked  55.25 seconds to win the event – setting a new Class 7A Indoor State record (58.63) established by Hoover’s Sydney Steely at last year’s state meet.  Hoover’s Brittley Humphrey was second with a season-best time of 56.35, and Steely bettered her own record finishing third with a 58.39 time. Ten records fell in Class 7A Saturday and 13 were broken on Friday.
Woodlawn’s Jayla Kirkland won two events in the Class 6A competition including the 400-meter dash (56.31) and 60-meter dash (7.54). Even though she holds the 6A state and CrossPlex records in each, her times came up just a little short of her career bests.

Karri Green of Piedmont set a 1A-3A 400-meter dash record (57.19) Saturday and followed with a near-record in winning the 60-meter dash 7.98) and 60-meter hurdles (9.22) to earn 30 points for the Bulldogs Saturday. She ran a 7.98 time and just missed the 7.70 record ran by Katie Brooks-Boone of Westminster-Oak Mountain in 2014.
Nathanaiel Huggins of Opelika won the 400-meter dash in 48.16, just 5/100ths of a second off the state record set by Marlon Humphrey of Hoover in 2013. Huggins’ Bulldogs teammate Kacey Spinks was second at 49.66. He also won the 60-meter dash with the overall and 6A state record 6.85 time – breaking his own mark (6.87) set last year.
Emmanuel Tait of Thompson set two records in Class 7A, winning the 60-meter dash in 6.91 seconds and the 60-meter hurdles in 7.81.
Noah Igbinoghene of Hewitt-Trussville set the Class 7A indoor state record with a leap of 48 feet, one inch to win the triple jump competition. His distance beat the previous mark (45-01 ¾) set by Miles Strickland of Bob Jones last year by three feet.  Strickland also broke his previous record with a 46-10 ½ effort to finish second.
