James Clemens Sweep North Regional Boys’ & Girls’ Bowling Championships

    TUSCALOOSA – James Clemens High School of Madison won four straight girls’ and boys’ matches Friday to sweep  the AHSAA North Regional Bowling Championships held at Tuscaloosa’s Leland Lanes.
    The Lady Jets, seeded third heading into the 16-team qualifying bracket Friday, beat top-seeded Sparkman 677-641 in the girls’ championship match. James Clemens also beat Southside-Gadsden 722-656 in the semifinals, Gadsden City 624-522 in the quarterfinals.
      The Jets won the boys’ championship beating Sparkman in the finals 850-727. James Clemens rolled a Friday-best 231 total in game four of the title match.  The boys’ champs also downed Hewitt-Trussville 786-108 in the quarterfinals and advanced in the semis with a 1-0 forfeit win over Huntsville.
      Eight girls’ and eight boys’ teams qualified for the AHSAA’s first State Bowling Championships which will be played Jan. 28-29 at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes. All first-round winners Friday clinched berths. The South Regional concluded Thursday.
    The North Regional opened play Thursday. Teams were seeded into a 16-team qualifying  bracket Friday based on Thursday’s total team scores. Due to the potential of inclement weather, the format Friday was changed from one traditional game and five Baker games to playing only the five Baker format games.
     Other qualifiers in the boys’ division are Vestavia Hills, Gadsden City, Etowah, Hewitt-Trussville, James Clemens, East Limestone and Huntsville. Vestavia’s team, seeded first, rolled a 204 in the second game of its first match to turn in the best first-round total (1,064). James Clemens had the best single game (245), rolled in game three of its 897-641 first-round win over Clay-Chalkville.
    Other first-round winners and state qualifiers were Pinson Valley, Hewitt-Trussville, Scottsboro, James Clemens, Gadsden City, Etowah and Southside-Gadsden. The best game of the first round was turned in by Etowah (233) in the fourth game of the Blue Devils’ 737-497 win over Ramsay. Etowah was seeded seventh.
