Sparkman Girls, Vestavia Boys Lead North Regional Bowling Tournament After Day 1 Competition


    TUSCALOOSA – Vestavia Hills High School’s boys posted a 2,649 to lead the boys’ division after the first day as the first AHSAA North Regional Bowling Championships got underway at Tuscaloosa’s Leland Lanes Thursday. Huntsville was just 54 pins behind at 2,595. Both teams head into Friday’s final round as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the boys competition.
    Sparkman High School led the girls’ competition after day one with a 2,177 pin total and is top seed heading into Friday’s girls’ final competition. Both divisions will conclude play Friday as teams compete head-to-head in a 16-team qualifying bracket round that will send the top eight finishers to the AHSAA’s inaugural State Bowling Championships at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes Jan. 28-29. Each of Friday’s matches will consist of one traditional game and five Baker games. The South Regional at Gulf Bowl in Foley, which got underway Wednesday, was still completing its final round Thursday night.
    Daniela Connor of James Clemens High School rolled a high series 577, and Nicole Gilbert of Sparkman was just eight pins behind at 569 to turn in the top girls’ performances Thursday at Leland Lanes. Grace Ann Clontz rolled a 538 series, good for third individually, to help Southside-Gadsden earn the second seed with a 2,133 team pin total. James Clemens was third at 2,105 and Scottsboro, paced by Sierra Lewis’ 535 series, is fourth. Lewis’ total ranked fourth best among the girls Thursday.
    Connor rolled 235 in her first game – the top individual game of the day. Clontz had a 233 game, Hewitt-Trussville’s Kelsie Brooke Ho rolled a 221 and Gilbert had a 220 game to round out the 200-plus efforts recorded.
    Rounding out the team finish for Thursday’s first round were, in order: Hewitt-Trussville (2,070), Gadsden City (1,946), Etowah (1,899), Vestavia Hills (1,869), Pinson Valley (1,860), Ramsay (1,825), Randolph (1,775), Bob Jones (1,740), Mountain Brook (1,637), Huffman (1,626), Gardendale (1,623) and Clay-Chalkville (1,527).
    Travis Saunders of Vestavia Hills and Luca Connor of James Clemens each had 200-plus efforts to emerge as the boys’ individual leaders. Connor rolled games of 212, 240 and 200 for a 652 series, and Saunders was right behind with 210, 213, 244, and 647 total. Vestavia Hills also got strong efforts from
Beau Reed and Sam Lawhon, who bowled 573 and 540, respectively, to help stake the Rebels to the first-day lead. Reed had an individual high game of 224. Myliq Davis rolled 211, 161, 204 for a 573 series to pace Huntsville.
   Other boys’ team scores included: Hewitt-Trussville (2,414), Etowah (2,407), Gadsden City (2,357), James Clemens (2,333), East Limestone (2,278), Sparkman (2,226), Gardendale (2,039), Pinson Valley (2,038), Clay-Chalkville (2,010), West Point (1,941), Huffman (1,909), Scottsboro (1,822), Central-Tuscaloosa (1,810) and Northridge (1,597).
    The teams will be placed in a 16-team bracket based on Thursday’s team totals with the top eight finishers advancing to the start tournament next week.
