Spain Park Girls, Stanhope Elmore Boys Lead First-Day Competition at South Bowling Regional

 

    FOLEY – Stanhope Elmore and Spain Park led the boys’ and girls’ first-day competition as the AHSAA South Regional Bowling Championships got underway Wednesday. Bowling continues Thursday at Foley’s Gulf Bowl as teams close out the regional in a 16-team bracket qualifier. The North Regional at Leland Lanes in Tuscaloosa gets underway Thursday and will conclude Friday. Each team bowls three games in the first round.
     The top eight teams from each regional will advance to the first AHSAA State Bowling Championships at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes Jan. 28-29.
     Pelham junior Morgan Mulinax rolled a 245 in her first game Wednesday and finished with a first-day leading 587 series to lead the South Regional first-day competition. Senior Megan Crews of Valley rolled a three-game 508 total for the second best series of the girls’ competition.
     Mary Montgomery’s Christian McNeeley bowled a high-game 258 and overall 675 to top the boys’ individual competition Wednesday. Zach Ward of Stanhope Elmore also bowled a 258 with a 628 total to rank second. Mustangs teammate Josh Wilson was third at 617 with a high game of 236.
      Stanhope Elmore rolled 2,578 to pace the boys’ action.  Spain Park was second with 2,499 and Mary Montgomery was third (2,472). The rest of the field fell in place with Thompson (2,463), Prattville (2,387), Baker (2,380), Fairhope (2,191) and Benjamin Russell (2,170) rounding out the top eight teams with Northview (2,169), Oak Mountain (2,138), Daphne (2,127), Foley (2,083), Valley (1,943), Baldwin County (1,927), Alma Bryant (1,896) and Satsuma (1,731) closing out the field.
      Spain Park led the girls’ team competition with a 2,108 team total and will go into the second day’s 16-team bracket elimination round as the top seed.  Northview of Dothan was second at 1,914 followed by Satsuma (1,897), Thompson (1,895), Mary Montgomery (1,841) and Pelham (1,828). Rounding out the team scoring were Beauregard (1,809), McGill-Toolen (1,782), Benjamin Russell (1,781), Valley (1,766), Foley (1,717), Alma Bryant (1,698), Spanish Fort (1,573) and Indian Springs (1,475).
    Girls’ teams will start at 8 a.m., Thursday and will bowl one traditional game and five Baker games using 16-team bracket. The boys’ teams will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will also compete in the same 16-team elimination bracket format.
     The top eight teams from each regional will advance to the AHSAA State Championships set for Jan. 28-29 at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes. The boys’ teams had not completed their first day competition at the time of this release.
     The North Regional gets underway at Tuscaloosa’s Leland Lanes Thursday and will conclude Friday.
