2015 SUPER 7 CHAMPIONSHIPS CLASS 7A STATE FINALS McGill-Toolen 14, Spain Park 12

 

     TUSCALOOSA – McGill-Toolen High School senior running  back Terrell Kennedy rushed for 166 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half Wednesday night and the Class 7A Yellow Jackets captured a 14-12 win over Spain Park to open the 2015 Super 7 State Football Championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
     Kennedy, named championship game MVP, finished with 203 yards on 22 carries as Coach Caleb Ross’ gritty defense staved off a strong second-half Jaguars comeback effort as McGill-Toolen captured its first state football title in the  Mobile Catholic school’s long history.
    Kennedy scored on runs of 4 and 54 yards to give McGill a 14-3 lead at halftime  – the first TD coming on an end run that culminated with the running back diving over the pylon to give the Yellow Jackets (13-1) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. His second run was a dazzling effort as he broke two tackles, then sliced his way through the Jags defense down the left sideline in the second quarter to.
   Spain Park place kicker Crosby Gray booted a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter. Coach Shawn Raney’s Jaguars (12-2) capped a 16-play, 60-yard march midway through the fourth period with Joey Beatty scoring on a 1-yard sneak to pull to within five at 14-9 with 5:54 left. The two-point try failed.
   The Jags defense got the ball back seven seconds later when Markel Clark recovered a Jackets fumble at the McGill 13. Ross’ defense rose up, however, and Spain Park’s Gray booted a 29-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-12.
    Kennedy then reeled off a 16-yard run on first down on the Jackets’ next series, taking valuable time off the clock. Spain Park got the ball back with 2:05 left but turned the ball over on downs at its own 32 a minute later.
     Trey Robinson added 32 yards rushing on five carries for the Jackets. Quarterback Paris Chambers finished 17-of-28 passing for 157 yards as McGill out-gained Spain Park 385 yards to 178 on the night. Larry Rembert finished with eight catches for 89 yards.
    Wade Streeter led Spain Park with 103 rushing yards on 26 carries. Quarterback Beatty finished 12-of-19 passing for 74 yards. Will Greene had three catches for 40 yards and Bridge Suber, six receptions for 27 yards.
    Defensively, Deanthony Washington led McGill-Toolen with 11 tackles and Carlton Martial had nine stops.  Perry Young had 11 stops for Spain Park and Bryan Sanderson had seven.
