Addison 3, Providence Christian 2
Down two games to one after three sets in the AHSAA Class 2A State Volleyball Tournament finals Thursday night, Addison’s Lady Bulldogs rallied behind the outstanding play of Kristen Brewer to post a 3-2 victory over Providence Christian to capture the school’s eighth state championship.
The Bulldogs of first-year head coach Kayla Woodard won 25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-11 also won the school’s third straight state championship as the exciting heavyweight battle closed out a very successful 45th annual AHSAA State Volleyball Championships at Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena and CrossPlex.
Addison (53-13) and Providence Christian (51-6) matched each other blow for blow all night as Brewer and Eagles star junior Hannah Harris each turned in brilliant performances. Brewer had 19 kills and equally as important, 27 digs as the Bulldogs clawed back. Abbie Chambless had 11 kills and Taylor Erb had four service aces. Setter Ragen Yarbrough had 35 assists and defensive standout Maison Evans had 23 digs.
Harris led the Eagles of Coach Bill Oldfield with a match-high 20 kills. She also had 12 digs. Kristy Odom added 17 kills for PCA and Ashlyn Byrd had 38 assists. The Eagles won state titles in 2011 and 2012.
