Six Defending State Champions in Field as AHSAA’s 45th State Volleyball Championships Get Underway

The 45th annual Alabama High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Championships commences Wednesday morning at the 4,000-seat Birmingham CrossPlex with 56 schools competing for seven individual classification state championships.
An AHSAA volleyball attendance record was set last season as the schools competed in seven classifications for the first time.
Six defending state champions are in the field in 2015 which culminates with all seven classification state finals being played for the first time in the adjoining Bill Harris 5,500-seat Arena on Thursday.  Mountain Brook (54-6) is back to defend its title in 7A, John Carroll Catholic (32-9) in 6A, St. Paul’s Episcopal (23-21) in 5A, Danville (34-27) in 4A, Bayside Academy (37-7) in 3A and Addison (49-13) in 2A. Only Athens Bible, the 2014 Class 1A state champion, failed to make this year’s field.
Bayside, coached by Ann Schilling, will be going for its 14th straight state title – already holding the AHSAA state record at 13.
The AHSAA hosted its first state tournament in 1971 with only one division. Bradshaw of Florence won the first titles before McGill-Toolen won the first of 19 in 1974.
Competition in the single-elimination tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. on Wednesday with 1A, 2A and 5A with the earliest matches. All classes are playing through semifinal action Wednesday with semifinals slated for 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., depending on the class.
        All finals will be Thursday.
The championship matches will be live-streamed for the second year in a row by the NFHS Network Thursday via its subscriber program. To sign up, viewers can go to http://www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/ahsaa and follow the prompts. The semifinals will not be live-streamed Wednesday by the NFHS Network, but three schools will be live-streaming quarterfinal and semifinal matches for their selected schools through the NFHS Network’s School Broadcast Program. The three are Albertville in 6A, Randolph in 5A and Jacksonville in 4A. Those matches may be accessed through the NFHS Network subscriber program as well.
The AHSAA State Volleyball Tournament made history in 2013 by becoming the first event live-streamed by the NFHS Network.
