North-South Soccer All-Star Teams Named For 2015 North-South Games

 

      The 2015 North-South all-star boys’ and girls’ soccer teams for the 19th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition were announced Monday by Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
      The soccer teams are each comprised of 18 current junior student-athletes from across the state. Both will play Tuesday, July 21) Montgomery’s Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.
The teams were chosen from nominations submitted by high school coaches from across the state to participate at annual AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Games competition in Montgomery July 20-25, according to Briggs.
     The AHSADCA All-Star Games also include in-state all-star games in softball, baseball, basketball and volleyball. The 56th North-South All-Star football game will be played the previous week and is set for Friday, July 17, at Cramton Bowl.
      The AHSAA Summer Conference is a week-long conference that includes sports specific clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleading coaches and officials. Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week.
     Among the conference’s highlights will be the Sportsmanship Luncheon honoring all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2014-15 school year and the Championship Coaches Awards Banquet that includes the naming of the 2014-15 Making A Difference Award Recipients ,Coaches of the Year, and the AHSADCA Athletic Director of the Year. Both banquets will be Friday, July 24.
      Concluding the week will be the 19th annual Officials Awards Banquet set for July 25 at noon. The featured speaker for 2015 will be Joe Dean, Jr., Birmingham-Southern athletic director and college basketball TV sports commentator.
      Coaching the South girls’ soccer all-stars are Paul Knapstein of McGill-Toolen Catholic and Scott Capehart of Enterprise. Ken Wright of Alabama Christian is the administrative coach. North girls’ team coaches are Jonathan Hammett of Chelsea and Brandon Rice of West Morgan. Retired Butler coach George Cavendar is the administrative coach.
     Rice led West Morgan to the 1A-3A state finals this season while Knapstein coached McGill-Toolen to the Class 7A semifinals.
      Coaching the North boys’ all-stars are Dwight McDonald of Oxford and Brandon Broughton of Madison County. Cavender is the administrative coach.  Jamie Ferguson of Bayside Academy and Austin Teel of Benjamin Russell are the South boys’ coaches. Ken Wright of Alabama Christian is administrative coach.  Teel and Ferguson coached teams to the Class 1A-3A and 6A semifinals, respectively, in 2015.
     Twelve girls that played in the 2015 AHSAA state soccer tournament semifinals or finals are on two girls’ team rosters including North players Alexandria Dunn of Class 7A state champion Oak Mountain and Morgan Thurber of 4A-5A state champion Randolph. Three members of the North boys’ team also played on state championship teams this season: Hunter Holstad of  Class 7A Oak Mountain, Daniel Miranda of Class 6A Fort Payne and Christopher Santos of Class 4A-5A Randolph.
   Among the top South girls’ players are four that played in state finals: Elizabeth Bailey and Caroline Lamberth of Class 4A-5A runner-up St. Paul’s, Sarah Thorne and Shelly Wall of 7A runner-up Auburn; and for the South boys, Luke Lamonte of 4A-5A runner-up St. Paul’s.
     The North holds a 9-4-1 edge in the series after last year’s 3-0 boys’ win. The North girls won 3-1 last year now has an 11-2-1 advantage in the 14-year series. 
     The AHSADCA operates under the auspices of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA). Membership includes coaches of all AHSAA sports as well as administrators of member schools.
