Class 6A Boys Tennis Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa Wins First State Title In Close 6A Finish

 

     Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa won at No. 5 and 6 singles and No. 2 doubles Friday in the AHSAA Class 6A Boys State Tennis Tournament at Mobile Tennis Center and squeaked out the school’s first state tennis title in one of the closest finishes in AHSAA history.
    Six points separated the top six teams with Coach Brad Armstrong’s Patriots totaling 41 points to win by two over Walker (39 points). Dothan was third with 38, Briarwood Christian was fourth with 36, Opelika and Florence tied for fifth with 35 each. Cullman had 27 to take seventh, Northridge and Saraland tied for eighth with 24 apiece.
     Junior Peter Whitehurst of Dothan captured the No. 1 singles title beating Cade Pressnell of Austin 6-3, 7-6 (4).  Whitehurst and fellow junior Jordan May also won the No. 1 doubles championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cullman duo Matthew Davis and Donny Camp.
     Junior Addison Osborn of Hillcrest won at No. 5, and sophomore Tag Shaw took No. 6 singles for Hillcrest. The Patriots also won the No. 2 doubles championship with juniors Jon Logan Beadlescomb and Osborne defeating Briarwood’s Lucas Catellanos and Bennett Davis 6-3, 6-1.
Briarwood was also named the team sportsmanship winner.
