Class 5A Girls Semifinals Wenonah 73, Talladega 34

Defending Class 5A state champion Wenonah (31-3) advanced to the Class 5A finals with a 73-34 win over Talladega in the girls’ semifinals at Bill Harris Arena Thursday. The 5A games were originally scheduled for the BJCC Legacy Arena Wednesday, but the winter storm that stretched through Alabama Wednesday forced the tournament to go to two sites Thursday.
All games will return to the BJCC Friday and Saturday as the 93rd AHSAA State Tournament concludes with boys and girls state finals in seven classifications.
Point guard Jayla Morrow only scored four points but handed out a tournament-high 11 assists as the Lady Dragons of Coach Emanuel Bell moved into position to capture the school’s eighth AHSAA state title with the win.   Alexus Dye had 19 points and nine rebounds, Kaitlyn Rodgers added 19 points and 12 rebounds, Faith Reynolds added 12 points and Tywanna English had nine plus six assists.
Pacing Talladega (21-10), coached by Jannie Keith, was Gabreal Johnson with 12 points.
The 5A girls’ finals will be Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
