McGill-Toolen Wins 36th Juanita Boddie Tourney To Capture AHSAA Volleyball Spotlight for Week 1

MONTGOMERY  -- McGill-Toolen Catholic High School (12-3) rolled to seven straight victories last week to capture the prestigious 36th annual Juanita Boddie volleyball tournament played at Hoover High School’s Finley Center – thanks in big part to the domination of senior Kenya McQuirter up front. McQuirter finished the tourney with 78 kills, 17 blocks, 23 digs and six service aces to push her school into the AHSAA Volleyball Spotlight for Week 1 of the 2018 season.
    The tournament field included 44 of the top teams from the AHSAA and surrounding states. McGill-Toolen’s seven wins included five over out-of-state teams. Three of the four teams in the semifinals were from outside the state.
    The defending Class 7A state champion Dirty Dozen (12-3) opened the week beating Mountain Brook in a regular-season match, then followed with tournament victories over nationally ranked Columbus (GA), Briarcrest (TN) and finally, a victory over Brentwood (TN) in the finals of the Boddie finals. It was McGill-Toolen’s second Boddie Tourney title in the last three years and its third since 2011.
    Coach Kate Wood also got outstanding play from senior setter Lillie Fromdahl, who had 201 assists, 16 kills, 15 digs and 12 aces for the week. Courtney Langham added 24 kills and 12 blocks and Imani Nicholson had 51 kills and 11 blocks as McGill also downed Riverdale (TN), Houston Academy (GA), and AHSAA powers Jasper and John Carroll Catholic.
    McGill-Toolen’s Boddie Tourney championship edged out two other top team efforts turned in by unbeaten Lawrence County (13-0) and unbeaten Carbon Hill (11-0). The Red Devils of Coach Robyn Hutto went 5-0 to win the Briarwood Invitational last weekend. Lawrence County downed the host Lady Lions in the finals. Savannah Graham had 65 kills and 39 assists and Laekyn Bennett had 185 assists in the five tournament matches and three regular season wins.
   Carbon Hill, coached by Dadrian Beaty, rolled to six straight wins in the Carbon Hill Invitational and finished 8-0 for the week. The Bulldogs, led by Alyssa Dutton with 78 kills, 46 digs and 11 service aces and Grayson Evans with 64 kills, 11 blocks and 12 aces, beat Wilson in the finals. Setter Sidney Keeton recorded 155 assists for the week.

MILESTONE
MARY MONTGOMERY POSTS 1,200TH WIN FOR SHOQUIST: Vikings Coach Nancy Shoquist picked up career coaching win 1,200 in Mary Montgomery’s Boddie Tourney win over Alma Bryant. Setter Beatrice Linquist helped the Vikings go 5-2 with 115 assists in the seven matches.

ASSISTS
GEORGIA STONICHER, PELHAM: Had 153 assists and 14 service aces in seven matches for Pelham (6-2).
STEPHANIE SHARP, BUCKHORN: Recorded 149 assists for Buckhorn (14-4), which went 7-2 for the week and won the Silver Division of the Boddie Tourney.
KAYLA KESHOCK, SPANISH FORT: Handed out 130 assists in six matches for the Toros (8-2), who finished 3-1 in the Boddie Tourney.
SAVANNAH RUTLEDGE, ALBERTVILLE: Led the Aggies (13-3) to an 8-1 record for the week and a runner-up finish in the Albertville Invitational tourney with 129 assists.
ALLIE ISOM, ARAB: Had 128 assists in seven matches as Arab went 5-2 for the week.
EMILY THORNTON, ALABAMA CHRISTIAN: Totaled 126 assists as ACA won the Silver bracket of the Mayor’s Cup Tourney at Montgomery.
AMY VANDEVELDE, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Had 124 assists in seven contests, including four matches in the Juanita Boddie Tourney.
JESSICA VEAL, SPAIN PARK: Accumulated 121 assists in nine matches – six in the Boddie tourney.
KAYLA CHAMPION, PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN: Had 120 assists in nine victories for the Eagles as PCA rolled to the championship of the Mayor’s Cup tourney in Montgomery.
EMMA NESTER, WILSON: Had 109 assists as Wilson (8-3) finished second to the host team at the Carbon Hill Invitational.

KILLS
JAYDEN WATKINS, ALBERTVILLE: Picked up 94 kills as Albertville (13-3) won seven of eight matches last week and finished second in the Albertville Invitational tourney.
A.K. GRIGGS, ARAB: Had 80 kills, 10 blocks and 12 aces to lead the Knights to a 5-2 record for the week.
MAEGAN MILLIGAN, WEST MORGAN: Had 72 kills as West Morgan (9-2) rolled to an 8-0 record and won its invitational tourney with a win over Danville in the finals.
AUTUMN MAYES, PROVIDENCE CHRIDSTIAN: Led the Eagles (9-0) to the Mayors Cub tourney championship at Montgomery with 65 kills. PCA downed Class 7A Enterprise in the finals.
CARSON ANN CROW, SAINT JAMES: Managed 63 kills and 36 digs for the Trojans (4-2) in six matches. Saint James finished 3-2 in the Mayor’s Cup Tourney at Montgomery.
RYA McKINNON, HOOVER: Had 62 kills, 37 digs and 10 service aces foe Hoover (11-2) as the Lady Bucs finished 5-2 for the week.
LEXIE SMITH, HARTSELLE: Had 56 kills and 15 blocks and teammates Hailey Holshouser and Lillyanna Cartee added 53 and 52 kills, respectively, in 11 matches for the Tigers (10-6).
SARAH GUTHRIE, PELHAM: Accounted for 52 kills, 62 digs and 15 service aces in seven matches for the Panthers (6-2). Teammate Erin Long also had 52 kills.

DIGS
ALEX PRESSNELL, BUCKHORN: Helped the Lady Bucks (14-4) go 7-2 for the week with 104 digs. Buckhorn won the Silver Division title of the Boddie Tourney.
ABBY ARIAS, HARTSELLE: Had 104 digs in 11 matches for the week.
ERIN EISENHIART, MADISON ACADEMY: Led the Mustangs (8-1) to the championship of the Albertville Invitational with 87 digs.
GRACE CARR, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Recorded 86 digs and added 47 kills in seven matches.

SERVICE ACES
SAVANAH FREE, DANVILLE:
Had 22 service aces and 122 assists as Danville went 6-3 for the week and finished second in the West Morgan Invitational.
MADELYN DIZON, LINDSAY LANE: Recorded 18 aces in seven matches over the week.
MARY CAITLIN WILLIAMS, McGILL-TOOLEN CATHOLIC: Had 15 aces in seven wins in the Juanita Boddie Tourney and teammate Katie Hemphill had 14.
BAILEY DREW McINTYRE, CHELSEA: Had 14 service aces in seven matches for the Hornets (6-1).
LUCI WILKINSON, BAYSIDE ACADEMY: Had 14 aces and 38 digs as the Lady Admirals (6-4) went 2-2 in the Boddie Tourney.
SARA PUCKETT, MUSCLE SHOALS: Had 13 aces, 24 blocked shots and 39 kills in seven matches for the Trojans (8-3).
NISSI CLINGAN, BROOKS: Managed 10 kills and 12 service aces as the Lions split a pair of matches with Mortimer Jordan and Hanceville.
