Mountain Brook and Spain Park finished 1-2 in the Class 7A Boys Sub-State Golf Championships held at Timberline Golf Course at Calera with outstanding team scores of 278 and 283, respectively.
The Spartans finished 10-under par and the Jaguars were 5-under. Ford Clegg first a 6-under 66 and Reynolds Lambert was one shot back at 67 for Mountain Brook. Nick Dunlap also shot a 66 for Spain Park and Landon Carner had a 70.
The top two teams and the two players with low individual rounds qualified for next week’s AHSAA State Championships at Florence. The individuals were Austin Coggin of Vestavia Hills (70) and Ethan Hacker of Hewitt-Trussville (72).
In other Boys’ sub-state action reported Monday:
CLASS 7A SOUTH SUB-STATE: McGill-Toolen Catholic posted a one-stroke win over runner-up Auburn winning 295-296. Fairhope’s Max Johnson and Will Richardson each shot 72 for low individual rounds.
CLASS 6A NORTH SUB-STATE: Muscle Shoals won the sub-state title with a 297 team total. Fort Payne was second at 313. Jasper’s Patrick Minor qualified with a 1-over 73 for the low individual score, and Ross Napier of Hartselle carded a 74.
CLASS 5A SOUTH SUB-STATE: St. Paul’s Episcopal finished first in the team competition and Briarwood Christian finished second. Slade McCraw shot a 76 for the Lions while Kyle Cornelius and Blake Bahos each shot rounds of 77 for the Saints. Rehobeth’s Brantley Scott had the low round of the day shooting 1-under 71.
CLASS 5A NORTH SUB-STATE: Scottsboro’s Kyle Price shot even-par 72 for the low round of the day to lead the Wildcats to a 311 team total and the sub-state title. Russellville was second two shots back at 313. Jaceton Murray shot 73 for Russellville. Qualifying individually were Trey Allen of Brooks with a 73 and Etowah’s Eli Antisdel, who had a 74.
CLASS 4A NORTH SUB-STATE: White Plains won the sub-state championship with a 310 team total. Madison Academy was second at 319. Kenny Okins led the Wildcats with a 2-under 70. Teagan Miller shot 74 for Madison Academy. Oneonta golfers Cole Davidson and Will Patrick were the two individual qualifiers with scores of 72 and 75. Patrick won on a second-hole playoff to advance to state.
CLASS 3A NORTH SUB-STATE: Pleasant Valley won the title with a 375 total. Glencoe was runner-up with a 382. Clements’ Matt Smith was the low medalist with a 1-under 71 and earned one of two individual qualifying spots for the state championships. Josh Daracott of Lauderdale County fired a 77 to land the other spot. Ethan Johnson’s round of 78 led Pleasant Valley, and Brock McNeely’s 86 was tops for Glencoe.
CLASS 1A/2A NORTH SUB-STATE: Donoho took the sub-state championship with a 317 total. Westbrook Christian was second at 322. Jacob LeCroy shot a 75 for the low round for Donoho and Jackson Bowman shot a 74 for Westbrook . Cedar Bluff's Nick Sawyer earned an individual spot in the state tourney with a 2-under par 70 for the sub-state tourney's low round overall.
CLASS 7A SOUTH SUB-STATE: Auburn’s girls shot a 1-over 217 to win finish first. McGill-Toolen Catholic was second at 240. Ashley Curtis and Emilia Smith, both of Enterprise, had the low individual rounds with 77 and 79, respectively.
CLASS 4A/5A SOUTH SUB-STATE: Northside won the sub-state championship with a 243 team total, and Trinity Presbyterian was second at 261. Erika Allen led the winning Rams with a 2-ovr 74, and Emma Pittman’s 76 led the Wildcats.
