MOBILE – Walker High School won the boys’ Class 6A state championship, and Briarwood Christian captured the Class 6A girls’ state crown as the AHSAA State Tennis Championships concluded Friday at Mobile Tennis Center.
Walker scored 66 points to win its first state title since 2010. Runner-up Florence had 47 and Opelika finished third with 36 in the boys’ competition. Briarwood totaled 58 points and Walker took second place with 50 in the girls’ division. Florence was third with 45 points.
Sophomore Chase Parker of Northview beat Nathan Wang of Shades Valley in the No. 1 singles finals 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Walker, however, sealed the boys’ championship winning three singles championships and two doubles titles. Sophomores Tyler Banks, Ben Hicks and John Bertoldi won at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively, for Coach Christian Matthews’ Vikings.
Banks and Hicks also won at No. 2 doubles, Bertoldi and Eli Matthews won No. 3 doubles. Capturing the No. 1 doubles title were Opelika’s Kevin Lazenby and Andrew Bizilia. The duo beat Dothan’s Peter Whitehurst and Jordan May in the finals, 6-3, 7-6. Whitehurst was the defending 6A singles champion.
Northridge was named the Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Briarwood Christian, coached by Jeremy Mears, won two singles matches and still has senior Jud Tarence waiting to face defending Class 6A state singles champion Lilly Holmes, a Florence senior, in the No. 1 singles championship match. That match was postponed until Tuesday afternoon. It will be played at 5 p.m., at Cullman High School. Tarence had played four matches on Friday and, by state tournament rules, could not compete in a fifth match.
Senior Frannie Ware also won at No. 4 singles for the Lions, and freshman Callie Ware won at No. 2. Tarence and Holmes did square off in the No. 1 doubles finals Friday, however, with Holmes and Ruth Roberts giving Florence a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win. Tarence was playing with partner Kateleigh Calloway.
The Lions already clinched the school’s first state title since 2013 prior to the final match.
Saraland was selected the Sportsmanship Award recipient for the girls’ division.
